What will they think of next?

This Saturday and Sunday at the Independence Events Center, you'll be able to watch ice racing. But it's not the kind you've seen on the highways in the last week.

So what is ice racing? The Xtreme International Ice Racing (XiiR) Web site says it is a professional racing tour on ice.

"Speedway bikes and quads are modified and compete on an indoor ice arena," according to the Web site.

"There are over 2,000 metal studs added to the tires and there are NO BRAKES!"

We're guessing that caution is not something these drivers worry about.

According to the XiiR Web site, there will be 20 to 25 races in the event. Saturday's races begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday's event starts at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at www.independenceeventscenter.com.

PS Laser Racing Team pre-event ... - Motorsport.com

Posted: 27 Dec 2009 07:01 PM PST

Car released and ready for start of 2010 Dakar

In four days the caravan will line-up for the start of the world's most gruelling test for man and machine, the 2010 Argentina Chile Dakar Rally. In that line-up will be South Africa's Dakar legend, Alfie Cox, and his German co-pilot and team-owner of PS Laser Racing, Jurgen Schroder. Cox left South Africa early yesterday, after spending Christmas with his family.

"Our car is very competitive, I have a lot of confidence that we can perform well this year. We saw last year that Navaras finished 4th and 5th, so I look forward to a great event," remarked Cox before his departure.

He continued: "Our car was released by the Argentine customs and is now checked through by the technical team. We are awaiting tyres from Overdrive, so everything is under control at the moment. We are very excited about this race. We share the T4 Overdrive Race Truck from Belgium with Krzysztof Holowczyc (Poland) who finished 5th last year, and Alexander Mironenko (Russia). Glyn Hall's technical team do our repairs and services at the overnight points and the rest day in Chile."

"We start in 28th place amongst the cars, which is not a problem, but it would have been very convenient to be higher up in the order on the first few days. The speeds will be high, the dust intense and the chance of making a mistake in the poor visibility, very good. I expect a very stressful first few days, but this is Dakar and we are ready for it. The race is divided into three sections, race up to the Atacama, the desert and the return from the Atacama. Secret is to build up a good position before we reach the desert, and that is why I expect a tough beginning," said Cox.

Other South Africans competing in the 32nd Dakar Rally are VW's Giniel de Villiers, who won the race last year, also co-piloted by a German, Dirk von Zitzewitz. The third South African, Ralph Pitchford is co-pilot for Mark Miller (USA) in another VW Touareg, they finished second overall last year.

Lots of changes are happening in the motorcycle category. KTM dominated the Dakar over the last few years with a slogan "The Desert is Orange". However, a number of KTM riders will line-up on the starting grid with their 690cc desert mothers, but they will have air intake restrictors limiting the power to these awesome machines. That should then equalise the output of the big machines with the new specification 450cc bikes which the organisers want as the new Dakar limit. As a result of the new rules, David Fretigne (France) on a 450cc Yamaha, finishing 3rd in last year's event will definitely be a favourite. Aprilla has started the production of a new 450cc desert machine for the Dakar, and BMW are building 450cc machines specifically suited for the event. Other manufacturers involved are: Honda, Husaberg and Husquavarna.

The skill, knowledge, navigation ability and endurance of the two former winners Marc Coma (Spain), and Cyril Despres (France) should outsmart the 450cc riders, but with the lower power, it will definitely be very exciting to see what is about to happen to the competition amongst the motorcycles.

With 28 quad entries the competition will inevitably be very fears, and one wonders, now that this is not an experimental class any longer, but an independent race class, what South African riders like Vicus van Deventer would have achieved if they still competed.Josef Machachek (Czechoslovakia) is definitely the favourite on a Yamaha.

Russia has dominated the T4 Truck category over the past few years, with the Kamaz trucks of Ferdaus Kabirov and Vladimir Chagin completely outdriving the opposition. Will the five days in the Atacama Desert, renowned to be the driest desert on the globe, again benefit these two teams, or can a Tatra, Ginaf, Man, Iveco, Mercedes, Renault or Hino surprisse everyone to take the top step of the podium this year?

With the racing fanatic crowds in Buenos Aries, Cox and Schroder are very excited about the event , starting on Friday (1 January 2010) and they look forward get out on the road once all the ceremonies are over. Tomorrow (29 December 2009) the display area opens for the public to come in and view the bikes, quads, cars, and trucks with all the workshop and support facilities.

Dakar 2010 is underway, nerves are starting to build, the excitement and adrenaline is mounting for the world's most demanding cross-country rally.

2009 Year in Review: Top 10 sports stories - Billings Gazette

Posted: 27 Dec 2009 03:04 PM PST

The Gazette's Top 10 sports stories of the year are selected in voting by the Gazette sports staff. Each member's votes are tabulated on a 1-through-10 scoring system. In this year's voting, Rocky Mountain College's NAIA national championship in men's basketball was a unanimous No. 1, with the Billings Outlaws' Indoor Football League championship edging the four state championships won by the Billings West and Billings Central soccer teams in a narrow vote for No. 2.

No.1

The Rocky Mountain College men's basketball program had never won a single game at the NAIA national tournament, but coach Bill Dreikosen's unlikely Battlin' Bears strung together five wins in seven days in Kansas City to win the title. Led by senior All-American and tournament MVP Devin Uskoski, Rocky finished the stunning run with a 77-61 win over Columbia (Mo.) College in the championship game on March 24.

No.2

The Billings Outlaws were the dominant team in the inaugural year of the Indoor Football League, and coach Heron O'Neal's team capped its 15-2 season with a 71-62 win over the River City Rage of St. Charles, Mo., in the league championship game on Aug. 15 in Billings. The title game drew a record crowd of 8,351 to Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark, topping the previous mark of 7,934 at the 2006 NIFL championship game.

No.3

In a matter of hours on Oct. 31, Billings staked its claim as the soccer capital of Montana. In Helena, the Billings West boys completed their second straight undefeated season with a 2-1 win over Missoula Hellgate in the State AA championship match, while the West girls defeated Bozeman 2-1 for their first state title. In Libby, the Billings Central girls also wrapped up their second straight undefeated season with 4-2 overtime win over Libby in the State A championship match, while in Whitefish the Central boys defeated Whitefish 5-1 for their first state title.

No.4

The Billings Mustangs have long been a perennial title contender in the Pioneer League, but in 2009 the losses just kept coming. And coming. When the difficult season finally ended on Sept. 11, the Mustangs had committed 134 errors, hit just 40 home runs and finished with a record of 24-52 — the worst winning percentage (.316) in the 61-year history of the franchise.

No.5

After an undefeated regular season, the University of Montana football team scored a pair of dramatic playoff wins — overcoming a 41-14 deficit to beat South Dakota State in the first round and producing late-game heroics to edge Appalachian State 24-17 in the semifinals — only to fall short in a 23-21 loss to Villanova in the FCS national championship game on Dec. 18 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Three days later, coach Bobby Hauck announced that he was leaving the Griz to be the coach at UNLV.

No.6

The Billings Scarlets won their second straight State AA Legion baseball championship and third in four years, defeating Bozeman 6-3 in the championship game on July 29 in Miles City. The Scarlets went on to win their first two games at the Class AA Northwest Regional in Medford, Ore., before losing the next two. On Aug. 3 in Three Forks, the Laurel Dodgers captured their first State A Legion championship since 1992 with 6-0 win over the Bitterroot Red Sox. The Dodgers then advanced to the championship game of the Class A Northwest Regional in Salt Lake City before losing to Kennewick, Wash.

No.7

For the second year in a row, Huntley Project proved to be too tough to handle for anyone in the Class B football ranks. On their way to a second straight undefeated season, the Red Devils put together one of the most dominant seasons in Class B history, averaging 10.1 yards per rushing attempt for the season and outscoring their opponents 574-37. Coach Jay Santy's squad capped its amazing run with a 31-0 win over Fairfield in the championship game on their home field in Worden on Nov. 21.

No.8

On Nov. 14 in Bozeman, Billings West, Billings Central and Huntley Project all celebrated state volleyball titles with three-game sweeps in their respective championship matches. West finished a dominant 29-3 season by defeating Bozeman in the State AA title match, Central won its first State A title since 1988 with a win over Anaconda in the championship match, and coach Iona Stookey's Huntley Project squad won its fifth title since 2003 by defeating Red Lodge in the State B title match.

No.9

The Billings West boys took full advantage of hosting the State AA tournament on their home turf of Lake Hills and Yellowstone. On Oct. 15, the Golden Bears shook off cold, snowy conditions to win their fourth straight team title and did so in unprecedented style, with Brandon McIver, Brian Muller, Jake Hedge and Mac Keating finishing 1-2-3-4 individually. In Class A golf, Billings Central's girls won their second straight State A team title and Sidney's Katelyyn Frank captured her second straight State A girls individual title.

No.10

Of all the awards Sam Charles won in his remarkable career at MSU Billings, the best was saved for last. On Dec. 2, the senior from Chiswell, England, was named the Daktronics NCAA Division II national player of the year for men's soccer. The honor capped a career which saw Charles finish as the all-time leader — not only for MSU Billings, but the entire Great Northwest Athletic Conference — in career goals (69), career points (156), consecutive games with a goal (9) and consecutive games with a point (15).

Weekend Destination: Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition In Vancouver ... - RoadracingWorld.com

Posted: 27 Dec 2009 06:18 PM PST

Dec 27, 2009, By Michael Gougis, ©Copyright 2009, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

It's a pleasant surprise to walk into a Harley-Davidson dealership and see on display, proudly and right up front, a VR1000 sporting a set of fat Dunlop racing slicks – and to see that road racer sitting right next to a land speed record-setting Buell.

Those bikes greeted visitors to Trev Deeley Motorcycles in Vancouver, British Columbia, over the holidays. And they were only part of the selection of vintage road and racing motorcycles on display at the Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition, located at the site of the Deeley dealership.

The exhibition hall, which opened in 2007, houses a rotating selection of the more than 275 motorcycles that are part of the collection started by Trevor Deeley.

Deeley, a Canadian racer, enthusiast and businessman, is the grandson of the founder of Canada's oldest Harley-Davidson dealership, which opened back in 1917. Deeley was inducted into the American Motorcyclist Association's Heritage Hall of Fame Museum in 1999. Deeley was not just a rider, he was a racer who backed his passion with action. To select just one example, according to Deeley's official biography, at one Daytona 200 race Deeley sponsored Yvon Duhamel and 21 other riders.

Current collection owners Don James, Chairman and CEO of Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada (as well as a member of the Harley-Davidson board of directors), and Malcolm Hunter, Chief Operating Officer of Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada, established an exhibit space at Trev Deeley Motorcycles that was awarded the 2007 Gold Award in the Education and Institution Category by the Interior Design Institute of BC.

Cool stuff at the exhibition includes an interactive map of motorcycling routes in the Pacific Northwest that visitors can view, explore via onboard footage shot by riders on those routes, and then print out route maps to take with them.

On display this holiday was the exhibit "End Of Empire," billed as "an objective look" at the rise and fall of the British motorcycle industry. Saddest, perhaps, are the descriptions of the British industry's refusal to invest in new technology and better motorcycles, focusing instead on increasing shareholder dividends, as well as the dismissive attitude toward the competitors from Japan; the Honda CB450 was laughed off as "an interesting bag of tricks."

The Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition is located at 1875 Boundary Road
Vancouver, B. C. For more information, contact the museum at (604) 293-2221, or online at www.DeeleyMotorcycleExhibition.ca . The exhibit is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is by donation.

Subject: Re:YEAR END THOUGHTS. - by: Lineaweaver - Flattrack.com

Posted: 27 Dec 2009 09:28 AM PST

Some year end thoughts:

As we close out 2009, I have a few "year-end" thoughts. You might not agree, but they're MY thoughts...in no special order.

1. Nothing in this world is more important than my kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and the many friends I've made over the years because of motorcycle racing. They are all "my family".

2. The most exciting motorcycle race I've ever seen was the first mile I ever saw. It was the 1958 San Jose Mile, won by Everett Brashear on a Sifton BSA Gold Star. He was followed across the line my Sammy Tanner on another Sifton BSA. Over 50 lead changes in 25 laps. Brashear was the only rider to lead one full lap. The last one.

3. The best "all around" motorcycle racer I ever saw was Joe Leonard. When you think of the disadvantage he had, he should have won many more. Joe at his lightest was 185lbs. The rest of the field was made up of guys like Tanner and Resweber, who were lucky to top 120lbs. ready to race.

4. The best ever at steering the bike with the front wheel were Resweber, Roeder, Dorresteyn and young Jimmy Woods.

5. The folks in Ohio are doing their best to ruin motorcycle racing in America.

6. A movie hasn't been made since On Any Sunday that I would (or have) paid to see.

7. There is NO Grand National Champion. Hank is the Singles Champ...Jared is the Twins Champ...and the rest doesn't really matter.

8. Tiger Woods is a Superstar...but an idiot.

9. Taylor Swift is the most over rated singer since Fabian.

10. Rod Lake is the biggest supporter of young motorcycle racers in the world.

11. Love him or hate him, Kyle Busch can drive a stock car...but Johnson is the Champion. Accept it.

12. Doesn't matter if she's black, white, red, yellow or orange, Halle Berry may be the best looking woman on earth.

13. Brakes ruined dirt track racing.

14. The "off-season" sucks.

15. The IMDA should be running dirt track racing.

16. I've been a part of 2 World Records at Bonneville...but once you get past looking at the cool cars, it's the most boring event I've ever been to.

17. The best Italian food I've ever had was at DuQuoin.

18. The best Chinese food I've ever had was in Spain.

19. If I were going to live anywhere but the U.S., it would be Australia, New Zealand or Italy.

20. If I ever even think about getting married again, I've told my son to shoot me.

21. I've told my family that if it ever gets to the point where they are thinking about putting me in a rest-home...STOP. I want to be on a cruise ship. It's cheaper, and they have everything I want. Food, vodka, a place to sleep, Vegas type shows, gambling, a doctor and a mini hospital.

22. Dick Mann is the toughest racer I've ever met.

23. No other group makes my foot start tapping faster than Tower of Power.

24. Our "Pledge" says "ONE NATION...UNDER GOD". Deal with it.

25. We should thank our Troups, Law Enforcement and Firemen every time we see them.

There are probably plenty more, but that's all this bored old man can think of now.
