Female Romanian luger knocked out after crash - The Sun News Posted: 11 Feb 2010 05:45 PM PST Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. Her scary crash came moments after her sister, Raluca, had safely navigated the 16-turn track, the world's fastest sliding surface. After her wreck, Violeta Stramaturaru slid limply along the ice while her sled continued through curve 16. At the finish-line area, her sister ran to the end of the observation deck high above the track for a closer look as the public address announcer directed medical personnel to the scene. Shortly after the accident, U.S. luger Megan Sweeney went airborne while exiting the final turn and crashed. She was shaken up but walked away. The Whistler Sliding Center track is among the world's most technically challenging courses. Racers are expected to threaten several speed records during the luge, bobsled and skeleton competitions. Parades, flyovers eyed for first Quaker Cruise - Salem News Online Posted: 11 Feb 2010 06:13 PM PST Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. Parades, flyovers eyed for first Quaker CruiseBy LARRY SHIELDSSALEM - Two parades, a U.S. Air National Guard C-130 flyover and possibly, just possibly a Goodyear Blimp in the skies over Salem during the first Quaker City Weekend Cruise. That was part of the discussion in the first planning meeting for the cruise scheduled for the extended weekend of June 24-27 with the featured "after party" cruises and parades to be held on early Friday and Saturday evenings in downtown. The meeting, held Wednesday in city hall, was chaired by Service Safety Director Steve Andres, and included representatives from Quaker City Raceway, the Salem-Perry Crime Watch, Council President Mickey Cope Weaver, Deputy Safety Director Greg Oesch, longtime hot rodder Jim Bonfert, advisors Patty Colian, Mike McGee and Bob Kornbau and several others. Committee assignments were made but more volunteers are needed and anyone interested in getting involved in the weekend can contact Andres at 330-332-4241. A letter requesting the Goodyear Blimp for the weekend was sent to the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company by Mayor Jerry Wolford, Andres said, but no response has been received yet. In the United States, Goodyear operates three blimps: the Spirit of Goodyear, based in Akron, Ohio; the Spirit of America, based in Carson, Ca.; and the Spirit of Innovation, in Pompano Beach, Fla. Andres said, "If we get a flyover and get the Goodyear Blimp to hang around for awhile, I think it would be fantastic." Dan Swindell, owner of Quaker City Raceway where the Steel Valley Super Nats will take place the same weekend, said he was attempting to have the U.S. Army "bring in some helicopters." Friday's 6 p.m. car parade will feature hot rods, street rods and customs while Saturday's parade, also at 6 p.m., will feature motorcycles. Both will originate at Quaker City Raceway. Oesch said they were looking for sponsors for the motorcycle parade. Once the parades conclude on East State Street, with the downtown area cleared of all curb parking, the street will be open for cruising. Andres said cruisers asked that the street be cleared of parking in that area for a number of reasons, safety being one of them. As in the last four downtown events, the city lot across from Timberlanes Restaurant and Motor Inn will be headquarters, but registration, handled by Bonfert, Colian and McGee, will begin with Thursday evening's kickoff event at Dunkin' Donut store on the east side. The committee tentatively set The Home Depot Store as the registration site, near the garden area, Roe Haskin, Crime Watch director suggested. Registration for show cars will be free and goody bags will be limited to the first 400 cars. Registrants will receive a badge and only registered vehicles are eligible to park in the Timberlane's lot which has 188 marked spaces. Parking in the Timberlane's lot is strictly on a first come, first served basis with no reservations or holding of spaces allowed. Once a car moves from a space, it is open for anyone. Bonfert said it can hold well over 220 cars and Cope Weaver said there were a lot of cars parked on South Broadway Avenue last year. Discussion to charge registrants, even one dollar, was dispatched quickly. Bonfert, who owns a full-blown hot rod and a street rod, said people who build and own these cars don't do it so they can pay to let people look at them. "They're the show," he said. Andres agreed, noting he's heard the same reasoning. There will be two 16- by 16-foot main event stages with tents, one at South Broadway Avenue and East State Street facing south, and the other at Penn Avenue and East Pershing Street, facing into the main staging area. The meeting discussed selling T-shirts, spaghetti-strapped tank-tops for women, and other items like custom hand rags with the event logo, food and drink coupons, overflow parking, vendor parking to staging cars and soliciting goody bag items such as key chains, pens, trinkets, coupons, gift certificates, oil changes, cases of oil and anything else automotive related or not. Swindell said he would ask Summit Racing, headquartered in nearby Cuyahoga Falls, if it could be a contributing sponsor for registration. Cope Weaver volunteered to head a "goody bag committee" and said Councilwoman Rita Joseph O'Leary would help. The Salem Area Amateur Radio Association is expected to help with communications and McGee, who is a member of AMVETS Post 45, said they can request the honor guard for opening ceremonies that will be held on both Friday and Saturday. Andres said, "We have vendors beating our doors to get in" and Oesch noted he received feedback from last year that a number of vendors said the weekend was "very profitable." He said a large confectionaire is interested along with a salt water taffy vendor, and Chinese, Greek and Italian food vendors. The discussion again focused on obtaining more volunteers and the next meeting was set for 7 p.m. March 10 in city hall.
