Some year end thoughts:

As we close out 2009, I have a few "year-end" thoughts. You might not agree, but they're MY thoughts...in no special order.

1. Nothing in this world is more important than my kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and the many friends I've made over the years because of motorcycle racing. They are all "my family".

2. The most exciting motorcycle race I've ever seen was the first mile I ever saw. It was the 1958 San Jose Mile, won by Everett Brashear on a Sifton BSA Gold Star. He was followed across the line my Sammy Tanner on another Sifton BSA. Over 50 lead changes in 25 laps. Brashear was the only rider to lead one full lap. The last one.

3. The best "all around" motorcycle racer I ever saw was Joe Leonard. When you think of the disadvantage he had, he should have won many more. Joe at his lightest was 185lbs. The rest of the field was made up of guys like Tanner and Resweber, who were lucky to top 120lbs. ready to race.

4. The best ever at steering the bike with the front wheel were Resweber, Roeder, Dorresteyn and young Jimmy Woods.

5. The folks in Ohio are doing their best to ruin motorcycle racing in America.

6. A movie hasn't been made since On Any Sunday that I would (or have) paid to see.

7. There is NO Grand National Champion. Hank is the Singles Champ...Jared is the Twins Champ...and the rest doesn't really matter.

8. Tiger Woods is a Superstar...but an idiot.

9. Taylor Swift is the most over rated singer since Fabian.

10. Rod Lake is the biggest supporter of young motorcycle racers in the world.

11. Love him or hate him, Kyle Busch can drive a stock car...but Johnson is the Champion. Accept it.

12. Doesn't matter if she's black, white, red, yellow or orange, Halle Berry may be the best looking woman on earth.

13. Brakes ruined dirt track racing.

14. The "off-season" sucks.

15. The IMDA should be running dirt track racing.

16. I've been a part of 2 World Records at Bonneville...but once you get past looking at the cool cars, it's the most boring event I've ever been to.

17. The best Italian food I've ever had was at DuQuoin.

18. The best Chinese food I've ever had was in Spain.

19. If I were going to live anywhere but the U.S., it would be Australia, New Zealand or Italy.

20. If I ever even think about getting married again, I've told my son to shoot me.

21. I've told my family that if it ever gets to the point where they are thinking about putting me in a rest-home...STOP. I want to be on a cruise ship. It's cheaper, and they have everything I want. Food, vodka, a place to sleep, Vegas type shows, gambling, a doctor and a mini hospital.

22. Dick Mann is the toughest racer I've ever met.

23. No other group makes my foot start tapping faster than Tower of Power.

24. Our "Pledge" says "ONE NATION...UNDER GOD". Deal with it.

25. We should thank our Troups, Law Enforcement and Firemen every time we see them.

There are probably plenty more, but that's all this bored old man can think of now.

What I said wasn't against Mike. He had nothing to do with the last race at Knoxville. I went to two GNC's there ,and watched a bunch of racers crash hard. All I stated was I hope it's smoother than last time.Personally, I can't wait to see it,because I think Mike runs a tight ship, and it will ROCK!!!!!!!!!!Merry Xmas Ion

Part of the problem is that every track is DIFFERENT, and each surface reacts differently to what you do to it. Compounding that problem is that prepping a track for cars is not only dramatically different than prepping a track for bikes, but there is the inherent language difference that creates problems.

To wit: I once watched a promoter tell a car track prep guy to "add a little water" to the track. What the car guy felt was a "little water" was a whole lot more than anything we bikes could handle.

As I remember, the dirt at Knoxville is very tacky, but for whatever reason it was inconsistent (the last time I was there). I seem to remember lots of flooding in the surrounding areas that week, so likely there was a ton of rain which made matters worse. Add into it the wheel packing in that one spot where all the vans drive across and the problem just gets worse and worse.

With that said, any track can be made raceable, but you cannot expect to walk onto a track at 8am on race day and have it ready for practice at 11 am.

Video: Travis Pastrana Crashes In Practice For New Years Eve Record ... - MotorAuthority

Motorcycles, rally cars, jumping, racing and just about anything fast, "extreme" or both--you name it, Travis Pastrana's probably done it, twice. But he still has a few areas left to cover, and this New Year's Eve, he'll be trying to set a new world record. This video from Red Bull shows that even at his level, practice makes perfect, even when it's not perfect practice.

Jumping on dry land instead of the watery escapade he has planned for the December 31st event, Pastrana shows that gravity does sometimes win. Check out the video below for the action, but don't miss the details of the record attempt below.

The record will consist of driving a Red Bull-sponsored Subaru rally car to a 250-foot jump from Long Beach's Pine Street Pier onto a barge anchored in the harbor. If he's successful, he'll nab the title from his current Subaru rally teammate, Ken Block, who set the current record at 171 feet in 2006, also in a Subaru rally car.

Pastrana's history with the water is infamous: he had his first X Games gold medal taken away for a celebration involving jumping his motorcycle into the San Francisco Bay--at age 15. This time around, he hopes to stay out of the water.

Though the Subaru Pastrana will use for the stunt will be prepared for safety, he says he wants to keep it close to what people drive on the street every day. "Our goal is to make this as authentic as possible. I want to use a really close-to-production Subaru, not some super high-tech ramp or super high-tech car. Just a full-on, old-school stunt. And definitely I want to drive out of it, too," Pastrana told the AP.

The stunt will be televised live at 11 pm Eastern on ESPN, following on a tradition of New Year's Eve stunts from other Red Bull motorsports greats like Robbie Maddison and Rhys Millen. You can catch even more details on Pastrana's upcoming attempt at the official site at the link below.
