2009 Off-Road.com Christmas Gift Ideas Off-Road.com's List of Gifts ... - Off-Road.com Posted: 15 Dec 2009 07:51 PM PST PAGE 2 4.Cabela's: Big Country Tent 5. Cabela's Shower Tent 6. Off-Road Short Course RC trucks: The first is by Traxxas and is called "Slash." This 1/10th scale truck has many really cool features. First off, it comes RTR (or Ready to Run) right out of the box. With just a battery for the truck and a few for the controller you are ripping up turf in a matter of minutes. Short-course race styling gets your attention, and the aggressive look on the pre-painted body sets this truck apart from the competition. Starting with the electronics we find the XL-5 electronic speed controller featuring three throttle profiles and thermal shutdown protection. The fact that this speed controller is four to eight cell compatible makes your speed and performance add-ons even better. The exclusive training mode built into this ESC allows the first timer to get used to the Slash before turning up the juice to maximum power. This ECU is also waterproof so getting into the wet stuff isn't even a concern. There are other items such as oil-filled Ultra shocks that deliver smooth handling, and included with the kit are several preload spacers to adjust for varying terrains or tracks. The 12T 550 modified motor is 12 turns of pure copper wire which gives big performance. Having Bell crank steering, a Revo-spec torque control slipper clutch and a Magnum 272 metal gear tranny make this truck take the abuse like a pro. Pre-glued 2.2 wheels and rubber sealed ball bearings do help as well. This would be nice under the tree for anyone. Our next truck is the Team Associated SC10. This race-ready truck has many features as well, and the model we liked was a scaled down version of the Lucas Oil #17 of Carl Renezeder. This SC10 1/10th scale truck comes with a powerful 17T Reedy motor and this beast really twists up at 30,000 RPM. Built by the factory, our RTR has only a few items to install and you're off and ripping. The SC10 is built on the six-time national champion RC10T4 platform, and with this heritage there is no denying the result you will find as you grip the trigger on your controller. The 2.6:1 ratio gets the truck moving quickly but keeps it under control. The world of tunable suspension is here as well with fully adjustable shocks. Other items such as an efficient dual-sided slipper clutch and 14 rubber sealed ball bearings make the SC10 durable for the long haul. Staying with the short-course theme, the engineers at Associated built wheels that resemble the full-scale counterparts. Wrapping the short-course wheels with aggressive multi-terrain tires allows this little terror to bash and race anywhere you want. The SC10 has many features left, and the Aluminum shock bodies are just one of the greats. The XP2 radio system and its metal gear steering servo is helped along by the XP SC200 digital electronic speed control. Realistic bumpers and a realistic Carl Renezeder fully painted body make this truck stand out. Look for this truck to put under the tree this holiday season. C. Our final truck in the Short course RC lineup comes from Horizon Hobbys under the brand name of Losi. This Losi Strike is the newest on the scene and has many similar features as the two counterparts. The Strike has a mid-motor layout, which is the biggest difference between the trucks. The Losi Strike comes with a Lipo-compatible speed control and low battery cutoff to protect those valuable batteries. The Strike also comes with fully adjustable, oil-filled aluminum shocks and an all metal geared brushless ready transmission. This means when the 2S lipo of your choice is dropped in there's no worry of destroying the internal parts that drive this 1/10th scale basher. You have the choice with the Strike to either buy the RTR or the BND (bind and drive) versions. If you already own a spectrum 2.4 ghz DSM radio then its just bind and drive. Spinning the realistic wheels on the Losi Strike is a 12T 550-sized performance motor. The motor utilizes an internally housed cooling fan to keep the heat down. Using fully captured ball ends means the hassle of cup style pop offs from stopping the fun at the track. All of the electronics on the Losi Strike are water-resistant and no swimming pool stunts. Sorry to burst that bubble. With the three choices it shouldn't be hard to find one that fits under the tree. fivefilters.org featured article: Normalising the crime of the century by John Pilger. Stargazing answers your questions | 'Breaking Bad'; 'Golden Girls ... - Kansas City Star Posted: 15 Dec 2009 08:12 PM PST If you have a music, TV, film or other pop-culture question for our panel of self-described experts, send it to kcstargazing@kcstar.com and put STARGAZING QUESTION in the subject field. Q. When is the show "Breaking Bad" going to have a new season? A. The AMC drama, starring Emmy winner Bryan Cranston, will be back for its third season in March. Q. I am a faithful watcher of "Golden Girls." Please tell me who is the female singing at the start of each episode. Kind of sounds like Rue McClanahan, doesn't it? A. While it may sound like McClanahan to you, that's Cynthia Fee performing a cover of Andrew Gold's "Thank You for Being a Friend." Q. Please tell me when I can expect that wonderful, intelligent show "In Treatment" to return. A. The HBO drama with Gabriel Byrne will begin production in early 2010 for telecast later in the year. Q. I, and I am sure others, would like to know if the LeBron James movie "More Than a Game" will be out on DVD in time for Christmas. A. Sorry, but Lionsgate will release the documentary on DVD on Feb. 2. It promises "a locker room full of exciting bonus materials," including a film festival Q&A with the team, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the documentary, a featurette that examines the psychology of team sports and the trailer that director Kris Belman used to pitch the movie. Q. I have been wondering if "The Cat and the Canary" — with Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard — can be found. It was so funny! A. There was a DVD release of the 1939 mystery-comedy some time ago that we have seen for sale on Amazon.com and Moviesunlimited.com, among other sites. There have been some complaints about the quality of the video, but it's … available. Q. In the early '70s, there was a movie called "Little Fauss & Big Halsy." It was about motorcycle racing. I and some of my friends would really like to see this movie again. Any info is much appreciated. A. The 1970, R-rated film starred Michael J. Pollard and Robert Redford with music by Johnny Cash. As far as we can tell, it has not made it to home video in an authorized form. Q. I have been watching the series "Mercy," about a hospital and its people, and the series "Three Rivers," also about a hospital and its people. Are there really a Mercy Hospital and a Three Rivers Hospital? If so, where are they? A. There are hospitals with those names, including a Three Rivers Hospital in Tennessee, a Three Rivers Medical Center in Kentucky and Mercy hospitals in Maine and Florida — not to mention Mercy West on "Grey's Anatomy." But they should not be confused with the ones on the TV shows. Those institutions are entirely fictional, with NBC's Mercy hospital in Jersey City, N.J., and CBS' Three Rivers in Pittsburgh. Q. A couple of weeks ago you answered a question about a movie with James Stewart, Maureen O'Hara and Lionel Barrymore. Stewart's family owns a factory of some sort, and O'Hara's family works in the factory. Barrymore is the crusty old father of O'Hara's family. I think the movie they were referring to is "You Can't Take It With You" from 1938. A. Readers will recall that we said the movie being sought was "The Valley of Decision," which had Barrymore, but with Gregory Peck and Greer Garson. Several readers have suggested that the correct movie is "You Can't Take It With You." We still think "Valley of Decision" was a better fit with the original letter writer's description but will offer the other film as a possibility, too. ICC plan to buy police bike slammed - Stuff Posted: 15 Dec 2009 08:41 PM PST By EVAN HARDING - The Southland TimesA city councillor has slammed a recommendation by Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt that the council buy a motorbike so the police can patrol Oreti Beach. Cr Norman Elder said police should buy their own motorbike to patrol the beach, near Invercargill. Mr Shadbolt's mayoral report at yesterday's full council meeting says there was a problem with motorbikes racing over the sand dunes at Oreti Beach. Cr Alan Dennis had launched a campaign to resolve the problem, and enforcement was part of the campaign, Mr Shadbolt's report says. "Police budgets prevent regular motorcycle patrols at the beach and I would recommend that the council purchase a motorcycle ... for police patrols at Oreti Beach." it says. Cr Norman Elder said it was strange that the council should have more money in its budget than the police had in theirs. The police had plentiful resources to clamp down on certain traffic offences, so it was bizarre they didn't have $7000 to patrol Oreti Beach, which was classified as a road, Cr Elder said. "They should be providing the funds for this." Mr Shadbolt said it was the result of government cutbacks to the police force, but Mr Elder said he didn't accept that. "When are we going to buy the next patrol car for them?" Council chief executive Richard King said the primary purpose of getting the motorbike was to protect the sand dunes. The council was also looking at installing a bylaw to protect the dunes, he said. If the council wanted to stop people wrecking the dunes, it needed the help of police, and they had asked for a motorcycle to do the job, he said. The council approved the recommendation to buy the motorbike, in principle, but wanted more information before making a final decision. Cruisers and Customs at the Seattle IMS - Motorcycle USA Posted: 15 Dec 2009 04:59 PM PST
Granted, the 2009 Seattle IMS show didn't carry the carnival-like atmosphere of prior shows and the number of vendors may have been down, but the people who did attend this weekend's Seattle IMS took advantage of the opportunity by spending a little more time at booths and getting quality face time with manufacturer reps and vendors. The Tapout Champions Area was the place to be indoors. The Bikes & Beats crew provided the tunes and an Icon fashion show attracted attention to the stage for the throngs who were checking out the custom motorcycles entered in the TapouT Ultimate Builder Competition. The 2Wheel Tuner's model contest kept their attention onstage where attendee's saw Motorcycle USA's spokesmodel, Megan Hartsell, win the competition. After Megan's victory, there definitely was an increase in traffic to the Motorcycle USA booth from attendees looking to get their picture taken with the beautiful brunette. Megan won herself a trip to Daytona during Bike Week 2010 for her effort where she will compete against winners of the 2Wheel Tuner's contest from other cities. Motorcycle USA and its sister site, Motorcycle Superstore, will have a booth in Daytona this year so be sure to stop by for some free swag and for photo ops with our lovely spokesmodels. Another popular new draw at this year's IMS is the Women's Center. Professionals from the Women's Motorcycling Foundation were on hand to field questions about motorcycling from both newbie and advanced women riders. Motorcycle gear makers like Cortech, Icon, Joe Rocket, Shift, Thor and Tour Master had their latest women's gear on display, while manufacturers featured bikes tailored toward women motorcyclists. "I did love the women's section. Thought that was really cool and hope that they'll keep that," said Michelle Scott. It was a mixed bag as far as the custom scene was concerned. The variety of custom motorcycles on display ranged from custom sportbikes to collectible cruisers. There were a group of sportbikes with stretched-out swingarms and fat rear ends decked out in paint that would make the Insane Clown Posse proud. A custom 'Fast 'n Fearless'ZX-14 with a Ricky Gadson tribute paint scheme that featured newspaper headlines pulled from the career of the motorcycle drag-racing giant also attracted a lot of attention. There were also plenty of rare collectibles, ranging from a vintage Harley sidecar to a 1943 Moto Guzzi military bike at the Vintage Motorcycle Enthusiasts' display. A 1978 Yamaha XS 650 chopper also stood out with its sprung seat slung low and black handlebars hangin' high, its small peanut tank mounted on a rigid frame on a chopper with no front fender. It was ultra '70s-style cool.Speaking of cool, the Baseball Legends Raider was also on hand. The motorcycle features baseballs autographed by Ken Griffey, Jr., Willie Mays and Hank Aaron mounted in the tank behind a glass case. The Star Raider was customized by Nick Anglada Originals and will be auctioned off early next year with proceeds benefitting the Boys & Girls Club of America. Maybe the motorcycle attracted the attention of the future highest bidder seeing as how Ken Griffey, Jr., spent 12 seasons playing baseball in Seattle.Ducati once again tried to steal the show with the introduction of its Multistrada and its junior Hypermotard 796. Having some of the hottest models in mini-skirts didn't hurt, either. Bringing along the crowd-pleasing Ducati Freestyle Team helped also, who were pulling off their tire-smoking antics on slick concrete Thursday night in the tight confines of a parking garage.
The show now heads back east where it will set-up in Novi, MI. The event will take place from Jan. 1-3, 2010. fivefilters.org featured article: Normalising the crime of the century by John Pilger. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
New '10 ATVMX Series Announced - Motorcycle USA Posted: 15 Dec 2009 04:52 PM PST The ATVPG and the ATVA, administrators of the ITP/Moose Racing AMA ATV Motocross Championship Series Presented by Parts Unlimited, have announced the creation of a North and South Challenge. Consisting of six races each, the Challenge is a program within the Championship Series established to accommodate those who are unable to contest the entire National circuit. "In these tough economic times, we had a lot of requests to make it possible for families to still participate in the Nationals," said Sam Gammon director of the ATVPG. "Although winning a Challenge title does not supersede a National title, it does merit prestige for riders who chose to participate." For riders who attend all six events of either the North and/or South Challenge, the Top 3 in each of the 35 amateur and youth classes will earn special awards at the final event of the series. Points will automatically accumulate for both the AMA ATV Motocross Championship and the respective North/South Challenge at each National event. The Challenge Schedules are:
