Barrichello ends five-year string of frustration - St. Louis Post-Dispatch Posted: 23 Aug 2009 08:14 PM PDT Brawn GP's Rubens Barrichello won the European Grand Prix on Sunday to claim his first Formula One victory in five years. The Brazilian took advantage of a costly pit-stop error by Lewis Hamilton's McLaren team to record his 10th career win — his first since the 2004 Chinese GP — and boost his championship hopes. Hamilton finished second ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen after having started the street race in Valencia, Spain, from the pole position. Jenson Button finished seventh to have his championship lead cut to 18 points over teammate Barrichello. Red Bull's Mark Webber finished ninth and is 20.5 points behind Button. "It's going to be a good fight. But at least it's going to be a fair fight between ourselves," said Barrichello, who danced on the podium after pumping his fists wildly through the victory lap. Hamilton looked set for a second consecutive win after having taken the Hungarian GP. But McLaren's mechanics fumbled when removing tire warmers during his final pit stop, which lasted 13.4 seconds, and the chance was gone. As Hamilton's exasperated father Anthony looked on, Barrichello moved clear in front after his second stop and held on to win by 2.3 seconds. Busch, Martin avoid fireworks — Mark Martin has never been a dirty racer. With trophies on the line, or points, or a spot in the season-defining Chase for the championship, he has prided himself on being a clean driver though 1,000 NASCAR races. So as a sold-out crowd watched to see if Martin would lay a bumper to Kyle Busch in the closing laps of the Sharpie 500 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway Saturday night, it never even crossed his mind. "We're racing, going for it, you know?" Martin said. "I expect Kyle to race me hard. I expect him to race me clean. And he has. He can expect the same from me. I didn't need to use the bumper. Kyle gave me all the room in the world to make that pass, and I didn't make it." There were no last-lap fireworks Saturday night as Busch and Martin staged a side-by-side charge to the checkered flag. Racing that hard could have been disastrous for both: Martin is clinging to a spot in the 12-driver Chase field, while Busch is fighting hard to get back into contention. Both drivers were in desperate need of a solid finish, and one small slip could have sunk their seasons. Instead, they raced clean and Busch emerged the winner. It snapped his 13-race Sprint Cup Series winless streak, while Martin settled for second. The two are now tied with a series-best four wins apiece. Scott Dixon, the points leader coming in and Franchitti's teammate with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, finished a disappointing 14th. He fell into third place in the points race. Tasca takes Funny Car race — Bob Tasca took his second Funny Car title of the season, beating Mike Neff with a pass of 4.23 seconds at the rain-delayed NHRA Nationals in Mohnton, Pa. Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also won their categories. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Rebuilding memories: Nostalgia drives Senatobia man to restore old ... - Memphis Commercial Appeal Posted: 23 Aug 2009 10:16 PM PDT When David McBride was a kid growing up in Hattiesburg and Laurel, racing cars on oval tracks was a common pastime. Stan Carroll/The Commercial Appeal Hanging around racetracks was something lots of kids did. McBride, now 72 "and going on 49," was no exception. "I raced cars and built several race cars," said McBride, who lives with his wife, Patricia, in Senatobia. "And I love old cars." That last statement led him to begin restoring those old cars, a hobby he's pursued for more than 30 years. He calls his love of working with cars "a marriage made in heaven." Today, McBride manages Discount Motors Inc., on U.S. 51 just a hundred yards inside Panola County. While his main business is buying and selling cars, trucks and motorcycles, McBride still restores cars. His pride is a 1949 Ford sedan, which is identical to the 1950 Ford he drove in high school. "My first car was a 1941 Ford sedan, and I wrecked it, of course," McBride said. "Then I had very rare 1942 Ford coupe and made a hot rod out of it." McBride knows the old car market well enough that he harbors no illusions about their value. He said it's not uncommon for someone to spend $5,000 purchasing an old vehicle then spend another $20,000 restoring it. "Then you end up with a car worth $10,000-$12,000 because the value is determined by what someone is willing to pay for it," he said. He explains the desire to restore old cars, especially ones owned and driven during someone's youth, thus: "Nostalgia is a strong emotion." "I've had many dealings with David, buying and selling cars," said Bill Wallace, owner of a finance company and car lot in Senatobia. "He's about the best I've seen at knowing the value of used cars. If he tells you something, you can write it down." In fact, one of McBride's passions is doing just that -- writing it down. He has produced about 50 narratives that he calls "short stories." He will soon put into book form a collection of the reminiscences of his childhood and young adult life. One, called "The Race Call," recounts a visit McBride and his brother-in-law made to a locally famous racer to see if he might sell a legendary race car the man had built. They were told the car was not for sale because the race driver had decided that pursuing racing was un-Christian, exposing young men to "fast cars, fast money and fast women." As they drove away, McBride mimicked the born-again racer: "Wherever they's fast cars, they's fast women and fast money." "I sure hope that's true," said McBride's brother-in-law. McBride became interested in writing after learning at the age of 21 that his great-grandmother was a full-blooded Choctaw. He later penned a history of the Indians of the Southeast, a work that has been used as a reference in some classrooms. "I wanted to set the record straight that Indians of the Southeast were not nomadic savages," said McBride, explaining his great-grandmother's people were very stable, maintaining permanent homes and engaging in trading goods, including cotton in five colors. "He is a smart person," Dennis Massey, a longtime associate from Como, said of McBride. Massey said he finds McBride's tales in an Oxford-based reminiscence magazine. "I read all his stories in the magazine. He's a colorful guy." McBride said both he and his wife are avid readers, devouring 10 books a week between them. He owns 2,000-3,000 hardcover books. And visitors to the auto shop office might be surprised to hear McBride's favored music playing on the stereo: "I'm a real opera buff. I have everything Luciano Pavarotti ever sang." Latest new cars to delight Speedshow fans - Scoop Posted: 23 Aug 2009 09:54 PM PDT Latest new cars to delight Speedshow fans A significant aspect of this year's Speedshow will be an exciting line-up of brand-new motor vehicles, says Speedshow organiser Keith Sharp. "It's great to have such a fantastic range of new cars to add yet another dimension to Speedshow," says Sharp. "We're thrilled to be showcasing the very latest models from Mercedes Benz, Ford, Mazda, Kia, Nissan, Suzuki, BMW, Peugeot, Chrysler and others at this year's Speedshow which takes place at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland over the weekend of 19 and 20 September. "It's particularly exciting that several of the new vehicle distributors have elected to use Speedshow to debut their 2010 models, cars never before seen in New Zealand. And with all the vehicles actually for sale at the show, we could probably say the Speedshow motor show will be the country's largest new car showroom for that one weekend. "I'd love to say what these new models are, but obviously the fact these cars are being debuted at Speedshow means we can't talk about them beforehand! Expect to see some very interesting and exciting new models in our dedicated Speedshow motor show." Speedshow '09 also includes the world's fastest NASCAR, Roary the Racing Car in the new Speedshow 4 Kids area, fantastic new motorcycles from some of the world's leading manufacturers, a wide array of motoring and motorsport-related exhibitors and the Batmobile from the original Batman movie courtesy of Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast. Tickets are available from Ticketek and more information about the event can be found on www.speedshow.co.nz. ENDS
