Raising the bar at Speed Week - Brazoria Facts

Posted: 24 Aug 2009 10:22 PM PDT

With a record time already in the books, Johnnie Rouse and company decided to raise the ante on their 2007 Harley-Davidson CVO Dyna at Speed Week on Aug. 9 in Bonneville, Utah.

Johnnie Rouse along with son Clint Rouse, Leon Brown, Steve Duncan, Howard Goe and Kevin Goe combined to set the new speed mark at 153.325 mph in the 2000 CC Production Frame-Production Pushrod category.

The group from Angleton broke its own record, which it set in 2007 at 145.048 mph. We were pretty much hooking it, driver Johnnie Rouse said of the final run. What they do is average out your qualifying run with your speed mark over the entire mile, and that is your record. We were pretty much getting after it.

Speed Week consists of seven days of racing (Aug. 8-14) for cars or motorcycles. Bonneville is 88 miles from Salt Lake City, and is one of the worlds more popular areas for breaking speed records in the entire world.

Between myself, Clint, Leon and Steve we all worked on the bike, Johnnie Rouse said. After working on the computer program, it was telling us that the best run potential was going to be 156 mph. I predicted wed go 156 as well, and the bike topped out at 155.

But the salt conditions and Mother Nature determine the racing conditions, he said. We are running on 100 percent salt that goes all the way to the horizon. The moister content determines how smooth the salt surface will be. If it rains, pack it up and go home, you are done.

That is what happened last year when rain disrupted most of the competition.

Two years ago the surface was as smooth as glass for the entire ride, Johnnie Rouse said. It was hard as concrete and absolute perfect conditions. But this year, there have been many who go every year to Speed Week, and theyd never seen conditions like this before.

Johnnie and Clint Rouse did all the machine work, and basically built the bike from scratch. Brown handles the head porting, and along with Johnnie, does the technical setup while Duncan worked with Johnnie on building the actual motor.

Duncan also supplied parts from his Duncs Hawgshop as well as Goe Cycles.

We got dealer items from Goe and special batteries and ignition parts from Dunc, Johnnie Rouse said.

It took the team only two days and two rides to set the mark.

Qualifying attempts start in the morning, and whenever someone qualifies for a record run they will impound the vehicle for the night, Johnnie Rouse said. The first to run are the qualifiers in the morning, and it is rare when a team can come here and do it in two races. We put the bike back in the trailer and sent it home after the record run.

Team Bozeman from Montana had the best shot at knocking off the Angleton team. But after qualifying their cyle for 20 record runs, the fastest they got their cyle to go was 146 mph.

We were extremely happy with what we did, Clint Rouse said. I dont thing there is anyone that can touch that record. The guys from Montana, they didnt even come close.

Though the accomplishment was pretty gratifying for the entire group, the celebration was mild-mannered in comparison.

We were so tired that we went to get a bite to eat and then hit the sack, Johnnie Rouse said.

Johnnie and company have not decided what is next for their cycle.

I thought about calling up some auction house and offering the bike up, Johnnie Rouse said. I figure if I want to defend the record, I can put a new bike together again.

With the trip a success, the gang did have a downside to deal with when one of their traveling party, Ken Leaf, passed away from a heart attack a week after returning from Speed Week.

He drove the 1,830 miles up there with us, and he took his own bike, but he had some technical issues and couldnt race it, Johnnie Rouse said. That was the sad part about this.
