February 8, 2010 - Woodcliff Lake, NJ - Husqvarna is backing 2010 racing in a big way by offering more than $11 million in contingency awards for 145 different U.S. racing series this season. "Think of it as the Husqvarna Bailout Program," says Marketing & Racing Chief Scot Harden. "Even though the economy is going through some tough times, now isn't the time to back down. Our support for all levels of racing has never been stronger."

With a total contingency fund of $11,678,993 and more than $5 million spread across an amazing number of 53 different offroad and cross country series, Husqvarna has posted the largest total contingency package of any motorcycle manufacturer involved in racing in North America. The pot is further sweetened with an additional $5.6 million in motocross contingency money. "We look forward to re-establishing Husqvarna as the leader in motocross and off-road racing so we are willing to put our money where our mouth is," Harden adds. "$406,905 in the GNCC, $308,765 in WORCS, $132,375 in AMA National Enduro, and $142,125 in AMA National Hare and Hound contingency alone."

  • Off-Road - $5,332,175
  • MX - $5,671,944
  • Supermoto - $588,175

"Husqvarna had a winning year on the track and in the sales department this past year and we want to continue to reward Husqvarna racers accordingly in 2010," says Husqvarna Motorcycles North America President Mark Brady. "This was a phenomenal result considering that 2009 was our first full year of operation in the USA."

Brady adds that Husqvarna continues to offer great consumer financing for 2010 making it even easier for more racers to take full advantage of Husqvarna's huge contingency program. "There continues to be a lot of good news at Husqvarna including some exciting new models joining our range like the all-new TE630 and SMS630," concludes Brady.

Caldwell, Idaho -- An Idaho Supercross racer is tearing it up on the national circuit.

Twenty-two year old Jake Weimer is tearing up the Supercross Lite circuit.

In the first race of the season in Phoenix, he was in third with just a few laps to go.

He made two huge passes and took the checkered flag.

That checkered flag is becoming a familiar site.

Weimer has taken first place in four of five SX races, coming in second in San Francisco.

The folks at Grizzly Sports in Caldwell have noticed.

"It's a good thing especially coming out of Idaho. A lot of people say to succeed in Supercross you have to come from California, and Jake's proof you don't have to be from California," said John Day the parts manager at Grizzly Sports in Caldwell.

Weimer's been racing since he was only four.

The Rupert, Idaho native is now on a huge national stage.

This past Saturday, February 6, he was once again on the podium and took first in San Diego.

Day says when they were in the pits next to Jake at a race at the Owyhee Motorcycle Club in Boise a while ago, he was incredibly nice and easy to talk to.

"On a high level he's a pro, but he doesn't have the big head about him. He pitted right next to us, and he was a super cool kid just shot the crap with us and you know just down to earth kid," said Day.

The kind of racer Idahoans are very fond of.

"I know a lotta guys that have been riding for a long time, it takes heart and dedication and non-stop twisting the throttle," said Day.

Day also says he really likes Weimer's riding style; he says Weimer looks really relaxed and comfortable on a bike.

Weimer's next race is Saturday, February 13, at Angel Stadium in Anaheim California.

King of Paparazzi” Dies in Rockville - NBC Washington

The man credited with launching the era of the paparazzi photographer has died.

Felice Quinto, 80, succumbed to pneumonia at his Rockville, Md., home on Jan. 16, according to his wife.

Often called the "king of the paparazzi," Quinto pioneered aggressive techniques for taking pictures of celebrities.

Quinto launched his career in his native city of Milan, Italy. He would loiter in cafes and hide in bushes, waiting to get the perfect shot of an unsuspecting famous person eating dinner. He went to great lengths, including disguising himself and racing his motorcycle alongside cars carrying celebrities.

Quinto is believed to be the basis for the character Paparazzo in the 1960 film, "La Dolce Vita." The term "paparazzi" was coined from the film.

The director of "La Dolce Vita," Frederico Fellini, asked Quinto to play a photographer in the movie. Quinto turned it down. He said he made more money in his real-life role.

Quinto met Geraldine Del Gioma, an American schoolteacher, at an art gallery in Venice in 1958. They married five years later.

After moving to the United States in 1963, Quinto began working for the Associated Press. He work turned more serious, with assignments including the funeral of President Kennedy and civil rights marches.

In the 1970's, Quinto covered celebrity nightlife at the famed Studio 54. In 1997, he published a book about club.

He was also Elizabeth Taylor's personal photographer.

Quinto retired from professional photography in 1993.
