2009 Glen Helen 24 Hour Results - Motorcycle USA Posted: 20 Oct 2009 05:18 PM PDT Teams at the HYR 24-Hour Endurance race at Glen Helen last weekend competed for their share of a $5000 pro purse with the JCR Honda squad of Colton Udall, Nick Brozovich, Ryan Dudek and Benny Breck turning 69 laps on their JCR Honda CRF450X. Over 65 teams (five in the pro division) started at 10 a.m. on Saturday and hammered a 10-mile course which included the neighboring San Bernardino County Sheriff's Emergency Vehicle Operations Center until the checkered flag fell at 10 a.m. on Sunday. "This race win was a long time coming," said Udall. "This was my third year racing the 24 Hours of Glen Helen in the pro class and first year with the JCR Honda team. It was a team effort and I can't thank my teammates enough. The JCR Honda pit crews are incredible. I'm mostly thankful to Honda for the best bike and Johnny Campbell who is the best team owner ever." Robby Bell of Sun City, CA led the Northland Motorsports Kawasaki team to second place with defending champion Ty Davis and the Zip-Ty Husqvarna team hot on their heels. Davis and his three compatriots chased down the KX450F on the Husky WR300 2-stroke.
"The bike was flawless... we didn't even change the oil," he said. "Besides being bulletproof, the WR300 was easier on the riders and tires; both critical factors in a race as tough and as long at the grueling 24 Hour event. We did three complete tire changes, but honestly could have easily completed the race with two. The WR300 is much lighter, easier to corner and handles better than the heavier 4-strokes we raced against - It's also a lot of fun to ride and it makes excellent power!" As the top 2-stroke, Davis and crew overcame losing their front brake and running out of fuel to beat the other two pro entries led by Ricky Brabec and Gordon Ward, respectively. Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards: Who will we be saluting this year? - Belfast Telegraph Posted: 20 Oct 2009 06:37 PM PDT
It has been another eventful and exciting year for Northern Ireland sport. Ulster's top rugby stars Stephen Ferris, Rory Best and Paddy Wallace played key roles in helping Ireland to an unforgettable Grand Slam in the Six Nations. The magic of Holywood youngster Rory McIlroy has thrilled us on the golf course. Jonny Evans helped Manchester United win the Premier League title and reach the Champions League final. The great Tony McCoy passed the 3,000 winner mark in national hunt racing. There were also golden moments for motorcycle heroes Jonathan Rea, Alistair Seeley, Eugene Laverty and Ryan Farquhar, while on four wheels Adam Carroll, Kris Meeke and Colin Turkington excelled in their chosen motorsport fields. Those achievements and many more will be celebrated when The Belfast Telegraph once again honours Northern Ireland's leading sports stars of the year. And we want YOU, the readers, to help us. >>Complete the form to make your nomination Today we launch The Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards for 2009, a selection process that will culminate in a gala banquet in Belfast in January when the winners will be revealed. Regarded as the most prestigious sports awards ceremony in the country, The Belfast Telegraph, in association with our joint hosts, the Northern Ireland Sports Forum and our generous sponsors Magners, is proud to celebrate our sporting successes. On the opposite page you will see how you can recommend your choice of winner from the various categories. As is normally the case the competition will be fierce. Last year our top award, the Sports Star of the Year, was won by gifted cyclist Wendy Houvenaghel, who of course won a silver medal in the Olympics in Beijing. It was a remarkable climb to the top award in Northern Ireland sport for Wendy, who had only took up cycling six years previously. The question is who will ride away with the big prize this time. It was a great year for Irish rugby with Ulster men Ferris, Best and Wallace all shining during that epic Grand Slam triumph. Ferris, in particular, had a sensational Six Nations, so good in fact that he was picked for the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa and was performing superbly in the Rainbow nation until injury struck and robbed him of a Test place. On the football front Northern Ireland star Jonny Evans has enjoyed a fantastic 2009. It would have been even better of course had our wee country qualified for the World Cup, but at least Jonny has a Premier League winners medal for consolation. He was a vital figure for Manchester United as they won the title last season and produced numerous superb displays en route to United's appearance in the Champions League final. For another Northern Ireland duo it was quite a year at Ibrox with Steven Davis and Kyle Lafferty winning the league and cup double with Rangers. If our stars had success on the football front, there was plenty more for our motorcycling and motorsport heroes. On two wheels Jonathan Rea has enjoyed the distinction of winning two World Superbike races this year, Alistair Seeley became the British Superstock and Irish Superbike champion, and Ryan Farquhar won an amazing 61 national road races. On four wheels, Adam Carroll was the inspiration behind Team Ireland winning the A1GP title, Kris Meeke claimed the IRC Rally Championship in dramatic style and Colin Turkington became the British Touring Car Champion. The list of success for Northern Ireland stars went on and on in 2009 with rower Alan Campbell claiming silver in the single sculls World Championship, breaking the previous world record in the process. Antrim snooker star Mark Allen reached the semi-finals of the World Snooker Championships and established himself in the top 10 best players around. Madeline Perry is in that bracket in squash, her achievement made all the more remarkable after fighting back from a serious mugging incident. Horse racing legend Tony McCoy continues to amaze, not just by racing past the 3,000 winner mark, but winning the jump jockey title for the 14th year in a row. Many feel 20-year-old golfer McIlroy will enjoy that sort of domination in golf. And if 2009 is anything to go by they may be right. McIlroy won his maiden European Tour title with victory in the Dubai Desert Classic in February. He's had top 20 finishes in three of the year's four Majors, finished joint 20th at the Masters, joint tenth at the US Open and tied third at the US PGA. And he is near the top in the Race to Dubai. The list above is an indication of how successful Northern Ireland sport has been this year and maybe you can think of someone else who deserves to be considered for the main prize. We also have the Player of the Year award which is made to an Ulster player who competes and excels mainly in the province. The Team of the Year prize is always keenly contested. There is also the Manager/Coach of the Year, Young Team of the Year and Young Player of the Year prizes. And as usual, we will be going beyond the big back page headlines to honour our disabled sportsmen and women and those people who make unheralded, but significant contributions to local sport at grassroots level. We don't want any deserved winners to miss out . . . and that's where you can help. Over the coming weeks we'll update you with news about the forthcoming event, but in the meantime, start getting those votes in! The big evening has been a special event down the years and with the incredible drama we've had in sport this year, that trend is sure to continue. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |
2009 ISDE Blog - Final Entry from Portugal - Motorcycle USA Posted: 20 Oct 2009 04:28 PM PDT
The 2009 Portugal ISDE is finally over and Day 6 again proved to be a challenging one. With only 50 miles of trail it looked like it would be an easy day, but the organizer again set the route speeds very high, so much so that a number of riders were late to check one and dropped some route points. I would have to classify this as probably the most dangerous day I have ever had at an ISDE. Once it was obvious that the times were going to be tight, we were racing pretty hard down all types of roads. These included dirt roads that would regularly intersect with paved roads creating dangerous intersections. After the first check, we were still racing, but primarily on paved roads, right through the middle of little narrow towns. It was all pretty crazy and I am glad to be done with it.
I got through it without incident, but Russell Bobbitt crashed and injured his shoulder on the trail. Later in the final moto Destry Abbott injured his finger, tearing off a fingernail. I fell in the second corner of my final moto and got back going in last place, but I got to pass lots of guys coming back through the pack so that was kind of fun. So I am in the airport now waiting for the first of the many flights that will take me home. Portugal has been a great place. The race location was postcard perfect (even if the trail wasn't). Everywhere we have traveled has been scenic. There is so much history in this area that it is hard to drive anywhere without being distracted by the numerous castles and ruins. My CRF450X is now in a container and hopefully I will see it before the end of the year. Other than tires, oil and air filters, the only time a wrench touched the bike all week was to adjust the chain. I certainly can't complain about that, it is big mental advantage having complete faith in the bike you are racing. I finished 45th in the E2 class with a silver medal and my club team came in 17th, just about where I expected to be. Overall I would consider it a successful week. Signing off from Lisbon, Chilly White
