Racing bikes tough balancing act - Indianapolis Star Posted: 27 Aug 2009 03:09 PM PDT (2 of 2) "The bike gives you some warnings. You start to feel it when you're going to lose it. That's what we use our knee for. The knee helps us feel the corner. If the bike starts to slide away, we can push with our knee and try to save it." The 2006 world champion from Owensboro, Ky., had his best run of a disappointing season at this track last year. He led for much of the race before relenting to eventual winner Valentino Rossi, the all-time leader in premier class victories with 76 and a six-time series champion. The Italian fan favorite again is leading the points. In a desperate need to chase down a leader, competitors will alter their lean angle to carry more speed through the turn. That's when it can get tricky, and the pucks become more vital. "If you're two seconds off the pace, you look around and say, 'What do I have to do?' " said Roberts. "Your lean angle has to be greater." Added Schwantz, "What's difficult is finding the limit and the recovery and not crashing." And keep in mind riders often enter the turns in packs, their bikes separated by inches. "If you're thinking about it," Hayden said, "you're not going very fast. It has to be reaction. "You're doing 200 mph, hitting brake markers and throttle markers. If you're thinking about it, you're in the back." Motorcycles to take center stage at IMS - WISH-TV Posted: 27 Aug 2009 12:45 PM PDT INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Motorcycles will take center stage at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend. As the riders prepares for the second MotoGP Race at the Speedway. The circle city is welcoming race fans with open arms. The city hosted a kick-off event in downtown Indy Thursday afternoon. Several riders brought their bikes to Monument Circle to get fans excited about the weekend ahead. Indianapolis leaders hope those fans will spend some time and money downtown as well as out at the track. Along with the Indy 500 and the Brickyard 400, the MotoGP helps reaffirm Indianapolis as the racing capital of the world. City leaders said the Moto GP opens Indianapolis up to a whole new demographic. They hope with the Speedway now embracing motorcycles it may decide to welcome other motorsports at the track. "It's hard to say. We're focused on this event this weekend, but we have a couple more years to celebrate the centennial. You never know what will come about," said Ron Green of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Red Bull Indianapolis GP Race at the Speedway is Sunday. This year riders are hoping to get a full race in, last year's race was cut short because of heavy rains and strong winds. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Big as an 'Apocalypse Now'-era Brando, it's the 2010 Triumph ... - Los Angeles Times Blogs Posted: 27 Aug 2009 04:42 PM PDT It's been 60 years since the Triumph Thunderbird came on the market, and oh so much has happened. The famed British motorcycle manufacturer became the bestselling marque in the U.S.... before its business was obliterated by the Japanese and it went bankrupt. Now the motorcycle that helped grow the brand into one of the world's most beloved is back. Big as an "Apocalypse Now"-era Brando, it's the 2010 Thunderbird from the Hinckley incarnation of Triumph -- 1,597 cc, 85 horsepower and something that's unusual for a cruiser -- a parallel, rather than a V-, twin motor. The T-16 motor is the world's largest production parallel twin, and Triumph is proudly showing it off under the twin spines of its tubular steel frame, as it should for a bike that's been in the works five years and is trying to run a little of Harley's business off the road, just as it did back in the day. Unlike the original, the latest incarnation of the Thunderbird isn't a hoodlum bike, but it is a bit of an outlaw in terms of upsetting the big American cruiser status quo. Its cylinders are liquid cooled, its chromed 2-1-2 exhaust is catalyzed, its six gears are belt- rather than chain-driven and there's optional ABS. Best of all in this post-home-equity-line-of-credit, bike-buying market, it's reasonably priced for the level of craftsmanship; $12,499 is the base price. The ABS version comes at an $800 premium.
