SENSATIONAL SECOND PLACE FOR DE ANGELIS AS ELIAS FIGHTS BACK TO NINTH

San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Alex de Angelis clinched his first ever MotoGP podium in the Indianapolis Grand Prix today, charging from his best ever grid position of fourth to his best race finish in motorcycle racing's premier class with a stunning second place. After losing ground at the start the young San Marino rider produced a strong pass on home favourite Colin Edwards early in the race to move up to fourth place before benefiting from crashes for Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi.

Toni Elias, who finished on the podium in the last round at Brno two weeks ago, was forced off track by race debutant Aleix Espargaro in the second corner of the opening lap and not for the first time this season he had no option but to battle through the pack from last place. The Spaniard produced a typically determined and combative ride to seal a creditable ninth place at the chequered flag. The next race is De Angelis' home event -- the San Marino Grand Prix -- next weekend.

Alex De Angelis (3rd): "I have to thank the team for the incredible job they have done this weekend -- the bike has been fantastic ever since we unpacked it on Friday and we have gone from strength to strength over the course of the weekend. They also gave me a lot of confidence this morning and honestly I think they had more belief that I would be on the podium today than I did! It is a fantastic result but it is no fluke because we have been in great form over the last five races. It is a long time since I was on the podium back in the 250cc class and I had almost forgotten what a great feeling it was. Now I want to enjoy it and celebrate with another good performance at my home race next weekend."

Toni Elias (9th): "Ninth place is not what we had hoped for before we came here but I can't complain because after making a bad start to the weekend we have made continual improvements and we were in good shape for this race. Unfortunately I was pushed onto the grass by Aleix into the second turn and it ruined my race. He came to apologise at the end of the race and I told him not to worry -- it has happened to all of us in the past! It is a shame because I think we could have been on the podium today, or at least in the top five, but to take ninth under the circumstances is still a positive result."

Fausto Gresini - Team Manager: "I am really, really happy with this second place for Alex. He produced a truly exciting performance, his pace was fast and the result was very much deserved. For the team to be back on the podium again after Brno shows that we are making excellent progress. I would like to take this opportunity to thank HRC, San Carlo and all our other partners in this project. It is a shame Toni was forced off track because he had the potential to do much better than ninth place."

Just For Fun column: Motorcycle competition provides lots of ... - Fontana Herald News

Posted: 27 Aug 2009 08:59 PM PDT

For Terry Heard, the pursuit of happiness through motorcycle racing has certainly been one wild ride.

Motorcycles have led Heard on a path from South-Central Los Angeles to Fontana, where he has become a winner in top competitions.

This past weekend was a particularly eventful one; on Saturday, he crashed during a practice session for the WERA event at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, but on Sunday, he came back to achieve some good finishes.

Oh, and he also had some friendly conversations with the people who happened to occupy the trailer in the garage area next to his: actor Dean McDermott (who was one of the competitors) and his wife, actress Tori Spelling.

It's all part of the exciting life which has accompanied Heard's employment at John Burr Cycles in Fontana, in addition to his service as a safety instructor for Fastrack Riders at the speedway.

In his instructor role, he teaches people how to correctly maneuver bikes (on the street and on the track), and he also emphasizes the proper protective gear — knowledge which came in handy for himself when he endured the crash. Fortunately, Heard, wearing the required full leather suit, suffered only a few scrapes on the arm. Still, he said he needed to overcome the psychological effects of crashing.

"It took me a while to get back up to speed, but by race time, I think I was ready to go," Heard said after finishing his four races on Sunday. He came in fourth, fifth, eighth, and 10th against tough competitors in the expert (top level) categories.

His biggest accomplishments, however, came earlier this year when he gained two victories at Willow Springs, one of the toughest places to triumph.

"I had been racing at Willow Springs for six or seven years and never won," he said. "It's weird — the magic just started coming together. I got a win -- and then I got another win."

His success was the culmination of a long-time appreciation for bikes which began when he was growing up in L.A. After high school, he came to the local area to play a year of basketball at Cal State San Bernardino, but he ended up getting immersed in the motorcycle world instead.

"I've always been fascinated with bikes, but it really took off out here (in the Inland Empire) because there are so many tracks out here," said Heard, who has been riding for 16 years and racing for the last seven. "I started out on a dirt bike, but when I started getting on a street bike it came easier, and I started rolling, and here I am."

And this is just where he wants to be.

"It's amazing," he said, and then he pointed to his famous neighbors in the next-door trailer. "Some of the people you meet here on the track -- Tori Spelling and her husband came out today. It's amazing."

Chaplains, doctors lend support to GP riders - WTHR

Posted: 30 Aug 2009 04:24 PM PDT

Cat Andersen/Eyewitness News

Indianapolis - While most MotoGP fans watched riders from the stands Sunday, a few made sure they were being watched from above.

"You pray that protection would be there in the midst of everything," said IRL chaplain Hunter Floyd.

"If you love racing and you love the Lord, it's a great combination," said Bob Hills, another IRL chaplain.

With bikes flying by at 200-plus miles per hour, they say the riders need a few prayers.

"When you know what kind of an athlete it takes to go around the circuit at the speeds they're going, they're all phenomenal athletes," said Hills.

The chaplains say they don't play favorites to try to get one rider to the finish line faster.

"No, no, we never pray for one more than the other," said Floyd.

The chaplains are stationed close to the medical center in case something happens.

"We're not so naive that we think there aren't going to be any incidents in racing, that's the nature, but we pray that God's hand will be in the middle of it all," Floyd said.

"Normally, the injuries in these kinds of races are the skin injuries. Then the fractures of the bones, shoulder, hand and foot," said orthopedic surgeon Dr. Claudio Costa.

Dr. Costa, who is from Bologna, Italy, sees the worst side of motorcycle racing - the injuries. He's world renown for treating riders from race to race around the world.

"We are very honored to stay here and work together with American doctors and the team, because they give us the best supply we need," Dr. Costa said through an interpreter.

He says for a race fan like himself, to be at the home of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, has been a highlight in his career.
