Posted: 14 Aug 2009 11:56 AM PDT Waukegan has need for speedWAUKEGAN -- When he first ran for mayor in 2005, Robert Sabonjian's proposals included bringing a motorsport race to the streets of Waukegan, saying "we need to get ourselves a piece of that pie." "I'd like to see something along the lines of what they have up in Elkhart Lake," he said in February 2005, referring to the Road America complex 100 miles north of Lake County. "I believe we can attract a major race to the streets of Waukegan, and we can do it within two years." Now, four months into his first term as mayor, Sabonjian said this week that plans are coming together to land a race in 2010, saying meetings have been held with racing officials and "they believe in us." "We're not done dealing yet, but we're in earnest negotiations with people," Sabonjian said. "We've had three organizational meetings so far, and we're going to reach out to corporate sponsors ... We believe this is the future of Waukegan." This weekend, Sabonjian plans to attend the Time Warner Cable Road Race Showcase at Road America, featuring American Le Mans Series events on the facility's 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit. Declining to get into specifics while talks proceed, Sabonjian said several racing formats are being eyed for Waukegan, including Le Mans, IndyCar and motorcycle. Races would take place on existing roadways, not on a facility like Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet. In Detroit, motorcar events were held from 1982 through 2001 on downtown circuits that ranged from 2.4 miles to four miles. More recently, American Le Mans and IndyCar events were held on the Detroit River's Belle Isle, but the Labor Day weekend races were postponed for both 2009 and 2010 due to the recession. "We had hoped that the economic environment would allow the Grand Prix to return to Belle Isle in 2010," the Detroit race chairman said in a statement last month. "Unfortunately, this continues to be a challenging time to secure sponsorship to produce a world-class sporting event. We remain committed to the future of the race and we are hopeful that the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix will return in the summer of 2011." The Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau has estimated that more than 100,000 people attended the races in both 2007 and 2008, generating some $53 million in economic impact for metropolitan Detroit in 2007 and more than $55.2 million in 2008. In California, the annual Long Beach Grand Prix, which dates in various forms to 1975, reportedly draws more than 200,000 spectators every April to watch an IndyCar Series race on a 1.968-mile street course. In the IndyCar Series, part of the Indy Racing League, street races are also held in places like St. Petersburg, Fla., and Toronto. In Joliet, the Chicagoland Speedway is scheduled to host IndyCar's Peak Antifreeze 300 on Aug. 29. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
