Area racing notes: Friedman eyeing Fairbury three-peat - Pantagraph Posted: 05 Aug 2009 03:49 PM PDT Daren Friedman would like to think he's the guy to beat in the late model division at Fairbury American Legion Speedway, and he's got the hardware to back up that notion. The 30-year-old Forrest driver is the two-time reigning track champion at Fairbury, and he owns a slim lead over El Paso's Joe Harlan in this season's points standings. "I've been in this battle before so I'm not quite as nervous this year," Friedman said. Friedman has taken four checkered flags at Fairbury to open a seven-point lead over Harlan. That's a switch from last season when Friedman won the championship despite failing to win a feature race. "Consistency isn't my thing this year," Friedman said. "We've had some bad luck and some parts failures. I started one race on the pole and was in the lead and broke a part on the first lap. I've just had some circumstances there that didn't work. "But all in all we've had a good year. We've got a new car and new shock packages and stuff, and it seems to be running good." With only three points races remaining at Fairbury, it's a two-man battle between Freidman and Harlan. "Joe's a good friend," said Friedman, who is second in the points standings at Farmer City Raceway. "We build his engines, and I sold him his race car this year. I want to win, but if (Harlan) wins that would be great. I'd be happy. "I think we're going to have to finish and win a couple, because Joe is running pretty good, too." Lincoln revises schedule: Lincoln Speedway promoter Don Hammer has announced that the track's three scheduled August dates have been cancelled. "It was a headache last year trying to race during the Logan County Fair, and the state fair is coming up and that's always a bad week," Hammer said. "We thought we would take the month of August off and come back at it on Sept. 6." Lincoln will host a Monster Midwest Series late model event on Aug. 6 and the 4-cylinder (hornets) nationals on Aug. 26. There will be a two-day street stock special on Oct. 2-3. The Oct. 3 program will also feature a Monster Midwest Series race. Hammer, who is also the promoter at Farmer City, has scheduled a demolition derby for Oct. 10 and quad motorcycle races on Oct. 17. Lincoln will conclude its slate on Oct. 23-24 with the $10,000-to-win finale of the Monster Midwest Series. Erb, Cook lead the UMP pack: Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville (late models) and Gary Cook Jr. of Deer Creek (modifieds) maintained their respective leads in the latest UMP DIRTcar Racing national points standings. Erb, who is bidding to win the UMP Summer Nationals and national points crowns for an unprecedented third straight season, holds a 33-point edge over Bloomington's Jason Feger (2,704-2,671). Other area drivers in the top 20 include Gibson City's Kevin Weaver (third), El Paso's Ryan Unzicker (seventh), Bloomington's Eric Smith (13th), Friedman (17th) and Harlan (20th). Cook owns a 76-point lead over Randle Sweeney of Clifty, Ky. Chatsworth's Lance Dehm is 15th. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

NASCAR: CAR--NASCAR-BUSCH'S CHASE DOVER, Del. -- Kyle Busch's chase for the Chase is running out of races. The emotional driver knows he has to get going over the next five races or else he'll be left out of championship contention. MOVED IRL: CAR--IRL-IndyCar's Makeover UNDATED -- Tony Kanaan could hear the purists getting riled up when IndyCar released its 2010 schedule last week, a schedule that for the first time features more road courses (nine) than ovals (eight). The 2004 series champions' advice? Deal with it. "We used to race in leather helmets 40 years ago, and we don't do that anymore either," Kanaan said. The series' decision, according to league officials, is as much about business as it is about sport.
