“NASCAR top 100 - Inland Valley Daily Bulletin” plus 4 more

NASCAR top 100 - Inland Valley Daily Bulletin

Posted: 07 Oct 2009 09:51 PM PDT

In no particular order:

1 Pre-race ceremonies, with all 43 teams standing at attention before the National Anthem. Quite a sight.

2 Kurt Busch. He's racing the No. 2 Penske Miller Lite Dodge. In 2003, while racing for Jack Roush, won the Auto Club 500 and received a painting with his car racing around Wrigley Field, home of his favorite team.

3 The majestic view of the nearby San Gabriel Mountains to the west and the San Bernardino Mountains to the east, among the very best panoramas in NASCAR.

4 Four U.S. Navy F/A-18 jets from VFA 146, the Blue Diamonds out of LeMoore Naval Air Station in the Central Valley, will perform a flyover on Sunday. Two F/A-18s are planned for Saturday's Nationwide Copart 300.

5 Mark Martin, who has competed in 22 races and has one Cup win among six. That includes a pair of IROC races, one Trucks and one Nationwide.

6 Get to Auto Club Speedway early enough and become part of the audience for the "first" live performance video shoot of Foreigner's "Can't Slow Down." Bring your lighters.

7 Robby Gordon. He's the local driver from Orange. In addition to Cup cars, he's also competed in open-wheel cars at the track and gained fame in the deserts just over the mountain range.

8 The spirit of Les Richter. The former Riverside International raceway general manager and executive vice president in Fontana was a driving force in the development of the Speedway and his presence at Fontana

certainly is missed.

9 Kasey Kahne, a past winner at this race, once again has put Richard Petty in the winner's circle and at least in the field for a eighth championship, this one as car owner.

10 Free parking, a rarity among the area's pro sports venues. Free for 32,000 paved spaces. Even some high schools charge to park at football games.

11 Denny Hamlin wins in his home state of Virginia. Now, if the Toyota driver could just win in team owner Joe Gibbs' home state of California.

12 Roger Penske, who had the vision to build the Speedway while standing atop the Cherry Avenue overpass. Many have stood on the same spot, but nobody else saw it the same.

13 If you look real close at the stalls along pit road, you'll notice there is no No. 13. One of those racing superstitions of yesteryear, like no green cars or peanuts in the pits.

14 Tony Stewart is winless at Fontana in Cup competition, although he did win a Nationwide race in 2008. However, the success of new team this year is the story of the year in NASCAR, regardless of how he finishes in the Chase.

15 Walking on the track. With the purchase of a pit pass, a fan can walk on the racetrack hours before the race. Can't do that in the NFL, NBA or MLB. But get off before the track goes active; otherwise you'll get the Gluck lecture.

16 Greg Biffle has four wins at the track, including a Cup win in 2005, all in Jack Roush Fords. The other three were in the Nationwide Series.

17 Matt Kenseth, the February winner who has won seven times in the 33 races he competed in, including three in Cup and four Nationwide.

18 Kyle Busch, once too young to race trucks at Fontana, is the only driver who put his bare feet into cement during the annual Hall of Fame ceremonies following his first Cup victory, the Sony HD 500 in 2005.

19 The Surfboard. During the Walk of Fame ceremony, 2008 Pepsi 500 winner Jimmy Johnson will be presented with a Ohana Kemp Surfboard, which has become a tradition since 2005 when Elliott Sadler won the Pop Secret 500.

20 Joey Logano, the heralded 19-year-old rookie in the orange No. 20 Home Depot car. His nickname is Sliced Bread, as in "He's the greatest young driver ever to compete in NASCAR since ..."

21 If they decide to make the trip out West, it's the Wood Brothers. The second-generation team owners haven't had the success at Fontana their fathers did at Riverside International Raceway and Ontario Motor Speedway, but the name is an icon in the sport.

22 Jack Roush. He's not hard to miss with his hat, and he's usually in the winner's circle on Sunday, as he was in February with Matt Kenseth, his seventh time. His stable of drivers also include Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Jamie McMurray and David Ragan.

23 Race jackets. It's usually pretty easy to determine a fan's favorite driver by the jacket they wear, even on a warm day. The coolest ones are the old-school kind, with drivers who already have retired.

24 Jeff Gordon, a three-time Cup winner, was second in February. In 2004, he was the target of the worst behavior ever at the track as fans threw beer bottles at his DuPont Chevrolet after a win.

25 Rick Hendrick, certainly the most successful car owner in NASCAR Cup history. This is the 25th year for Hendrick Motorsports and it's on the verge of winning a ninth championship. His drivers include Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin.

26 Pit stops. It used to be extra crew guys in T-shirts, with a cigarette dangling, changing tires and dumping fuel in. Now, it's a well-choreographed dance lasting less than 15 seconds with the outcome of the race often in the balance.

27 The scoring pylon, standing 145 feet tall along pit road. That's tall enough to list all 43 cars (plus laps) and with enough lights at night to provide comfort to those in the infield.

28 Ricky Bobby. At some point in the 250-lap race on Sunday, whenever something amusing is said over the public address system, somebody will recite a favorite Ricky Bobby (played by Will Ferrell) or Cal Naughton, Jr. (John C. Reilly) line from the 2006 movie "Talladega Nights."

29 Kevin Harvick has 33 races at the speedway in Winston West, IROC, Nationwide and Cup. He has two wins, Winston West (1998) and IROC (2002).

30 Jeff Burton has raced 30 times at Fontana, winning one Nationwide Series race in 2007 but a Cup-best second in 1999.

31 Chances are there will not be anyone charging from the rear to win since the farthest a car has started and still won a Cup race was Kenseth, who started 31st in the 2006 Auto Club 500.

32 The water tower, rising 145 feet, is the only remaining piece of the Kaiser Steel mill site on the Speedway grounds. Someone should look into a statue honoring the workers who helped make the area what it is today.

33 Clint Bowyer, whose best Fontana appearance may be a Hamburger Helper commercial.

34 John Andretti. Long-time NHRA fans in the crowd will remember Andretti as a driver of a Top Fuel dragster who once competed at Pomona Raceway.

35 Seats for $35, the least expensive in the grandstands, in the front three rows that were included in most of the speedway promotions.

36 For years, only those close to Los Angeles had the opportunity of enjoying King Taco. When King Taco first arrived at the track, it mostly was for the infield. Now, with a stand in the FanZone, it's available to all.

37 The fire/safety teams. A quarter of these anonymous men who work under Mike Carnes' direction are heroes to those they came face to face with during the recent Station fire in Los Angeles County.

38 Elliott Sadler won the inaugural fall race in 2004 in the No. 38 M&M's Ford for Robert Yates Racing. He's not been able to find the sweet spot since that September night.

39 Ryan Newman. Three hours before climbing into his No. 39 Chevrolet, Newman will spend time reading to children on the FanZone stage as part of the Reading to Race program.

40 Flat screens. There are enough flat television screens around the grandstands so that a fan making a run to the bathroom or concession stand won't miss much.

41 David Ragan took a step few do, all in the name of charity. He recently appeared in the TV show "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?" He also was a part of the 2005 Jack Roush "Gong Show" competition, also on TV.

42 Hermie Sadler, Elliott's younger brother, is a former Cup driver who's a regular on Speed television and a Total Nonstop Action Wrestling personality. For $55, not only can you get a ticket to the Pepsi 500 but also for the Oct. 18 pay-per-view TNA Bound For Glory at the Bren Events Center at UC Irvine.

43 Richard Petty. He still takes several minutes to sign a swirling autograph, and he signs as many as he can. He definitely belongs in the Hall of Fame.

44 Dale Jarret, whose last appearance at Fontana in 2007 was in the No. 44 UPS Ford. He's now an ESPN analyst along with Andy Peachtree while Dr. Jerry Punch calls the action.

45 The infield. Not quite the wild atmosphere as in Talladega (which has its own jail) but it's still a weekend party among the RVs that begin to line up on Thursday.

46 One does not have to travel to Los Angeles and walk among the rich, famous and just plain weird to visit Canter's Deli and order New York deli fare, including corned beef and pastrami sandwiches. It's in the FanZone.

47 Marcos Ambrose. He's the only Australian in the field but he has a long way to go to replace Suzuki motorcycle rider Mat Mladin as the most successful Aussie in Fontana.

48 Jimmy Johnson. He's been very successful at Fontana, dominating so thoroughly in the closing stages of the Labor Day Sunday night race in 2008 that many fans were yawning.

49 Chad Knaus. Not since Ray Evernham was calling the shots for Jeff Gordon has a crew chief enjoyed so much success at Fontana.

50 Elevators and escalators, which certainly ease the walk up and down the stairs. Budget considerations prevented them in the original plans.

51 Only in Fontana: sushi. It's a California Roll that's sold out of "Woodies," just inside Gate 14. Don't know about the saki.

52 Mike Helton, by whatever title NASCAR bestows upon him (president), he's the ruler in the garage area. And unlike his pro sports counterparts, he's visible in the garage area and control tower.

53 Bronze Heaven. Earlier this year, as part of the THINK Together after-school program, students and volunteers laid down 14 million pennies at the track for a new Guinness World Record. For the math majors, that's $140,000.

54 The Apex restaurant sports the Wolfgang Puck brand, a bit pricey for any race track. Located next to Impulse, the track's gift shop.

55 The Car of Tomorrow, or Today if you will. From the grandstands, or right next to them for that matter, there's no way to distinguish a Chevy from a Ford from a Dodge or Toyota. But with the wing, they look cool enough.

56 Tim Brewer, the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion crew chief who spends most of his time in the cool ESPN Craftsman Tech Garage and explains the inner workings to viewers.

57 Trains, mostly freight, working the BNSF main line throughout the races. Perhaps by next year, the labor issues will be resolved and fans can ride Metrolink to the Speedway again.

58 Unlike Martinsville, where hot dogs are red on purpose, the ACS dogs and burgers are the regular kind. According to Americrown, which serves the food, fans will eat 1<MD+,%30,%55,%70>1/<MD-,%0,%55,%70>2 tons of hamburgers and a ton of hot dogs.

59 Souvenir row. The number of souvenir trucks, which sell everything from high-priced jackets to key chains, have dwindled throughout the years, but there's always an endless supply of Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Earnhardt (both Dale and Dale Jr.) merchandise.

60 The Auto Club Speedway Kiosks in the FanZone. For AAA members, swipe your Auto Club Card; for others, use your driver's license to get a list of prizes you might win, including tickets to the 2010 Auto Club 500.

61 Traffic. Getting in and out is relatively easy, other than the year a drunk driver tried to run from a wreck on the I-10 in the early morning hours. Few tracks enjoy the freeway access or multiple entry points.

62 The freestyle Moto-X stunt show with Rockstar Metal Mulisha in the FanZone before the start of the race.

63 Opportunity, California. No, it isn't the newest city in San Bernardino County, just the county's slogan for its marketing efforts to attract business to the country's biggest county, which is directly west of Laughlin, Nev.

64 There will be more than 3,000 volunteers working in some capacity this weekend at the speedway. Without these folks, the price of admission would be much greater than anyone could bear, and the total experience wouldn't be as great. They deserve a cordial greeting for their efforts.

65 Only in Southern California will one hear Mariachi Latino de Jose Cervantes at a Cup race. They are one of four groups playing at Viva la Fiesta, located in the FanZone.

66 John Darby. Chances are pretty good if you're a regular fan you won't be seeing much of Darby, Cup Series director. Chances are if a driver is called to Darby's office, he might want some representation.

67 Come hungry and bring $35. For that price, fans with a ticket can purchase an "All Day Food Fest" wristband, valid for one entr e, snack and non-alcoholic beverage each time through the line at Americrown concessions.

68 Trams. Not the fastest vehicles on the property but they'll get you to where you're going.

69 Rusty Wallace. The 2001 California 500 winner will be part of the ESPN Countdown crew that includes Alan Bestwick, Ray Evernham and Brad Daugherty.

70 Jeff Moorad, among the owners of the Hall of Fame Racing and also Padres CEO, probably will be in town for the race. He knows his way around here, since in 1984 he was the agent for Chaffey College pitcher Calvin Jones, who was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the 1984 amateur baseball draft.

71 David Gilliand. He's back in the TGR Chevrolet for this race at his "home track," considering he used to reside in Chino Hills.

72 Sammy Hagar. Fontana's very own "Red Rocker" played a pre-race concert in 2007 and is the face of the current ACS TV commercials this year.

73 The blimp. Goodyear's airship will fly above the speedway and give viewers a bird's-eye perspective of racing on the two-mile oval.

74 A.J. Allmendinger. He's probably better known in Long Beach for his open-wheel racing, but he's the one in the Richard Petty Motorsports 44.

75 Kyle Petty. Now that he's not racing and walking the garage area with a microphone, somebody may confuse him with Bill Tunney, a security guard who's a lookalike for the racer.

76 In addition to sponsoring the Racefest on Thursday night, Staters Bros. operates the Stater Express Convenience Store in the infield. For those who run out of the necessities and don't want to drive miles to a grocery store, it's invaluable.

77 Sam Hornish Jr. A past winner at the track, averaging more than 200 mph for a 200-mile race in 2003 in an Indy Car, when the IRL visited here.

78 Juan Pablo Montoya. Battling for a title at Fontana is nothing new for Montoya. In 1999, he attracted a large Colombian following en route to his CART championship.

79 Thursday night's Stater Bros. Racefest in the FanZone, with free admission and parking. Great time to collect a few autographs and visit the souvenir trailers.

80 Infield care center. The state-of-the-art building at the western end of the track isn't just for drivers involved in crashes, but for fans who need medical attention. In past years, most have been heat-related, which may not be the case this time.

81 Richard Childress. Unless he's hunting in Wyoming or another exotic locale, he'll be on top the pit box of one of his teams, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton Clint Bowyer or Casey Mears. He has the No. 3 Dale Earnhardt car in his museum in Welcome, N.C.

82 A cool October Sunday, hopefully with the Santa Ana winds staying down. Anything but the tortuous triple digits that made the previous Labor Day Sunday races almost unbearable.

83 Brian Vickers, this year's surprise Chase entry, won the pole position in February. He may be driving for Red Bull Racing, but consider him a dark horse.

84 The suites. It's well worth the money to sit in either the Skyboxes high atop the grandstands or the Terrace Suites just above pit row. From the Skyboxes, it's a great view of the entire track and San Bernardino Valley. From the Terrace suites, it's a birds'-eye view of the pit stop ballet.

85 Palm trees, all 298 on the property, including 61 down the back straight. There also are 31 Canary Palms, 150 Washingtonia Filifera and 117 Mexican Fan Palms.

86 Jimmy Spencer, part of the Speed Race Day crew that includes John Roberts and Kenny Wallace.

87 Joe Nemechek, winner of the inaugural pole but not expected to last more than 40 laps or so this time out.

88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Whether in the 8 or 88, Junior has the biggest fan base of them all. However, he's not had very good luck at Fontana with either Cup number.

89 The L.A.-based rock/pop band The 88 will perform a pre-race concert prior to Saturday's Nationwide Copart 300 in the FanZone beginning at 11 a.m. Ironically, or not, it's also Earnhardt's 35th birthday.

90 Banner-towing planes. In the early days, there were as many as 17 circling with different messages. With today's economy, this week's number could be as low as four.

91 If you're a fan of "The Hills" on MTV you'll be happy to know Audrina Partridge has been named honorary starter for Sunday's race. If you don't know of "The Hills" or MTV, never mind.

92 If you're a fan of "Dancing With The Stars," and who isn't after Helio Castroneves destroyed the competition, you'll be happy to know Kelly Osbourne will serve as honorary starter for Saturday's Nationwide Copart 300. Too bad her dad Ozzy won't be around to issue the command to start engines.

93 Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a frequent race visitor, easy to spot because of his big security detail. But his first visit to the grounds was for his role in the 1984 film "The Terminator."

94 George Gillett Jr. In a few short years, the co-owner of Richard Petty Motorsports has raised his profile. He bought out Ray Evernham, merged with Petty and will soon merger with Yates Racing. He's also discussing a business plan with Saudi Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdullah al-Saud, a member of the Saudi Royal Family. Shades of NHRA's Allen Johnson.

95 Text messaging. Track owner International Speedway Corporation and InStadiumSolutions have partnered for a text-message based communication system that allows fans to communicate directly with the track's command post if assistance. Text: ACSFAN, your issue and location to 41513 (standard SMS rates apply).

96 Speed television. Whether it's Trackside At, the Pre-Race Show or Cup qualifying and practice, it'll have more live hours from Fontana than any other network. Plus, John Roberts and Wendy Venturini do good work.

97 Danica Patrick, or the lack thereof. She's busy at Homestead for the IRL finale, with the hint of competing in NASCAR next year. Nobody has ridden one win as far as she has.

98 The $99 Budweiser Block Party promotion: a reserved seat, pre-race pit pass, access to Budweiser Block Party hospitality chalet (continental breakfast and lunch buffet), souvenir gift from Budweiser Racing and a photo opportunity with "the exclusive Budweiser Eliminator Boat."

99 Carl Edwards, who entertained everyone in the stands with a backflip off his Ford in February, 2008. He flipped nine times that season and has yet to do so in 2009, but he'll be off his crutches in case he does.

100 David Reutimann, in the No. 00 Toyota, is the future face of Michael Waltrip Racing. In his 2007 rookie season, he survived a vicious hit out of turn 3, above, that left him dazed.

Arend breaks 13-year drought in NHRA - Inland Valley Daily Bulletin

Posted: 07 Oct 2009 10:05 PM PDT

1 A lesser racer might have quit and "gone back to the cubicle."

But not Jeff Arend, the San Dimas resident who drives a Funny Car for Kalitta Motorsports in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. He ended a 13-year drought Monday in Memphis and, at the same time, gave his team a huge emotional lift.

"This is one of the best days of my life," Arend said after defeating Tony Pedregon in the finals of the Midsouth Finals. "To get this win for Scott and Connie and everyone at Kalitta Motorsports is amazing. It's surreal.

"To get the win was just incredible. Connie is the best owner to work for in drag racing. He's a racer's racer, and I can't explain what this win means to me and everyone on our DHL team who have struggled so hard to get this `Wally' for Connie and for Scott."

It was the first win for the team since Scott's death in a qualifying accident in June 2008. For the 72-year-old Connie Kalitta, the legendary "Bounty Hunter," it put a cap on his 50 years of NHRA competition.

"If you have to wait 13 years to get a win, there's nothing much better," said the 46-year-old Arend, in Richmond, Va., for a promotional stop before this weekend's event. "We were all happy, there were tears.

"A big weight was lifted off our shoulders."

For the first 15 stops on the circuit, Arend was winless, going through a series of tuneup changes in search for more speed and consistency. The problem was identified about

the same time Aaron Brooks started spending more time with the team.

"We weren't that far off," Arend said, "we just needed a little help. Now it's looking good."

Arend was called in to drive after last year's tragedy. His calm demeanor has been a plus to a team dealing with the emotional issues.

"We're a good fit," he said. "We race hard and like to have a good time. It's a family-oriented operation, more than anyone I've ever been associated with, always upbeat.

"It's pretty awesome. It's nice to get a reward."

2 Next Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C., the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame will be announced. This much is known: the five selected will certainly be worthy of induction, but there will probably as as many questions as there will be praise.

Voters - representing drivers, owners, the sanctioning body and media - had a field of 25 to choose from. In reality, any of the 25 would make excellent choices. We don't have a vote, outside of participating in a fan vote, but our selections would include:

William France, NASCAR creator and founder;

Richard Petty, all-time win leader and current car-owner;

Dale Earnhardt, tied with Petty with seven championships;

Junior Johnson, who collected 182 wins as a driver and car owner;

Bill France Jr., at the helm during NASCAR's growth spurt.

The key question is why limit inductees to five? The first class should be representative of NASCAR's 62-year history. There's only one chance to lay a foundation.

At the rate of five per year, NASCAR will reach it's greatest 50 in 2019. This could have been the opportunity to recognize many for their achievements in the sport before they pass on.

Today's Sprint Cup Series cars are capable of exceeding 200 mph, a far greater speed than the Hall of Fame will achieve.

3 Any parent who has ever lost a child has a concern about that life being forgotten.

For Jon Medlen, who lost son Eric in a Funny Car test accident, and Connie Kalitta, whose son Scott lost his life in a qualifying crash, they know the sport has learned valuable lessons from those deaths.

Just ask Tim Wilkerson, whose young son Daniel smashed head-on into a retaining wall during a first-round run at the NHRA Midsouth Nationals on Monday. It looked far worse than the actual reality. A father and his team credit the safety advances after the Medlen and Kalitta crashes for making the difference.

"All the stuff we've done to these race cars from the loss of our last two friends probably saved my kid's life," said the elder Wilkerson. "I really can't say enough about all of John Force's people and the efforts he has gone through to make sure our cars are safer than they used to be."

Ironically, the younger Wilkerson did not attempt a qualifying run Saturday in an effort to save the only engine he had available.

"The good thing is the kid's OK and all the safety equipment on the car did its job," said the father.

And if a second testimonial is required, Bob Tasca III, Wilkerson's tech mate, had a problem in Charlotte two weeks ago and he also credited the safety lessons with saving his life after the bead lock sheered off the rim during his final qualifying run.

4 If it's racing you want to see, and don't care what day it is, the Southern California Fair at the Lake Perris Fairgrounds is your kind of place. For nine days, beginning Saturday, there will be a motorsports event of some type.

A ticket to the fair is all that is required to see everything from speedway motorcycles to the powerful 410 USAC/CRA Sprint Cars to RV Demolition Derby at Perris Auto Speedway.

On Saturday night, it's the California Lightning Sprint Cars at 1:30 p.m., followed by the USAC/CRA 410-cubic inch Sprint Cars. On Sunday, it's an off-road and Quad Freestyle daredevils at 1:30 and 7 p.m.

Monday, it's the 2009 Fair Truck and Tractor Pull, with the PASSCAR Street Stocks together with the Jet Car Meltdown on Tuesday.

Freestyle motocross takes over Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Southern California Fair Speedway Motorcycle and Sidecar Championships, featuring Flyin' Mike Faria and Gary Hicks, are set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Friday and Saturday are dominated by Monster Truck events, 7:30 p.m. on Friday and shows at 1:30 and 7 p.m. on Saturday. The fair concludes Oct. 18 with the 17th Double Trouble Demolition Derby at 1:30 and 7 p.m., followed by the insane RV Demolition Derby.

5 David Gilliland, set to compete Sunday at Auto Club Speedway for TRG Motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pepsi 500, will make his Orange Show Speedway debut.

Gilliland has raced throughout Southern California, but never at the San Bernardino banked and paved half-mile.

"I went there as a kid and watched my dad (Butch) once and went there and tested once just to shake a car down, but that was it," said Gilliland, whose served a crew chief for his father's NASCAR Winston West title in 1997.

Gilliland will drive Linny White's Late Model in the Twin 50s, a Chevrolet Monte Carlo being prepared by Luke Dodd with Jerry Dodd on hand for advice and moral support.

Ryan Daniel of Mentone is the division points leader by 18 over Kevin James of Yucaipa and 40 over John Mattie of Highland. Also on the card are Street Stocks, Vintage Midgets and Sprint cars of the Western Racing Association, Train races and drifting. ...

Toyota Speedway in Irwindale will feature a 125-lap race for the SRL Touring series in addition to Legend Cars and S2 in their final points race, Classic Stocks and Bandoleros. Nick Joanides won the NASCAR Late Model title last week by 38 points over Tim Huddleston, operating with a $10,000 budget.

Putting it all together : Handicapping races is like solving a puzzle - Fresno Bee

Posted: 07 Oct 2009 10:05 PM PDT

Fresnan moves at the speed of life

You can usually pick out the old dirt-track motorcycle racers because they have mangled shoulders, bones jutting out in all directions like a sack of nails.

Marsh Runyon is a bit more distinctive. He's also missing a leg.

He told the doctor to cut it off in 1982. It was slowing him down anyway. No joke.

Unconventional cowboy

Ja Allen is a cowboy. His identity radiates from the tip of his straw hat to the spurs that dangle from his boots to the fact that he breaks horses for a living.

"Every horse on this property was considered crazy or unridable," said Allen, surveying his seven-acre ranch at the foot of Burrough Mountain.

"It seems like the crazier the horse, the better I get along with them."

$10,000 offered for information on horse killings

MADERA -- An anonymous donor has offered a $10,000 cash reward for information leading to whoever fatally shot two horses last weekend in a foothill pasture beside Highway 41.

Madera County Sheriff John Anderson said Wednesday that the donor called him at home to make the offer. Anderson said several people have approached him since the mares were reported shot Monday to express outrage.

"I'm upset," said Anderson, who doesn't own a horse. "We hate to think that there's somebody in our community who would do something like that. I don't know what kind of a thrill they'd get out of it."

Fair time is race time

Every October, the lure of horse racing attracts people to The Big Fresno Fair like moths to a bright back porch light.

They stand or sit shoulder to shoulder on the rail, in the grandstands, the box seats and by the betting machines -- studying their race programs, placing bets, sipping cold ones then whooping it up as the horses thunder down the stretch.

The reasons they turned out Wednesday to the track on opening day of this annual two-week show were as varied as their ages, color of skin and occupations.

Willlburrr'! Calling Mr. Ed' fans

"I thought you didn't like Westerns." Wilbur to Mister Ed, who is watching TV.

"I'm waiting for Leonard Bernstein." - Mister Ed

You can take your Trigger, your Champion, your Silver and all the other television horses. For my money, the only TV horse worth his oats was the golden palomino Mister Ed.

Handicapping races is like solving a puzzle. Using as much information I can gather -- class, previous race times, post-position, breeding, equipment changes, workouts, jockey/trainer percentages and tendencies, video replay analysis, as well as my own experience and intuition (a gift from my grandmother) -- I envision how each race will be run from start to finish, kind of like a detective. There is nothing more exciting than having a race unfold exactly as I thought it should.

Late changes, such as scratches, obviously affect races. Let's say there are two speed horses entered that I figure will battle for the lead and use up all their energy trying to outduel each other. I may select a horse that I think will benefit from that duel. But if one of those speed horses is scratched, there would only be one speed horse to control the pace of the race with an uncontested lead (not using as much racing energy) -- making that lone speed horse much more appealing.

Indonesia mulls declaring villages mass graves - Terra Daily

Posted: 07 Oct 2009 09:44 PM PDT

Villages buried in landslides triggered by last week's earthquake may be declared mass graves, Indonesian authorities said Wednesday as relief agencies battled to reach remote areas.

Up to 400 people are believed to have been buried alive when hillsides collapsed in the 7.6-magnitude quake and obliterated four adjacent villages in Padang Pariaman district of Sumatra island.

West Sumatra Governor Gamawan Fauzi said most of the dead would probably never be found or would be in such a state of decay that it would be better to leave them where they were.

"If after umpteen days the bodies are broken, if we dig them up, probably their arms will break off, their legs will break off. It's no good," he told reporters in Padang, the provincial capital and worst-hit city.

"If the community is willing, from a religious angle it is okay not to rebury them. So that area would be designated a mass grave."

The official death toll from last Wednesday's quake stands at 704 but the Red Cross believes the final number will be more than 3,000, with hundreds of bodies still interred in the debris.

One body was recovered from the flattened Ambacang Hotel in Padang on Wednesday, the 76th corpse pulled from the wreckage there since the quake.

Military officer Haris Sarjana said 71 corpses remained buried at the site, which has been sprayed with disinfectant to prevent the spread of disease.

Relief agencies are racing against time to get aid to farming villages in the rugged hinterland that are still cut off a week after the massive earthquake devastated parts of Sumatra.

Around half a million people could be homeless, according to estimates by the United Nations and Red Cross based on the official figure of about 100,000 homes destroyed.

UN humanitarian response coordinator Rachel Lavy said there was no shortage of aid supplies, and more was on the way aboard US warships expected to arrive off Sumatra by Friday.

US aid officials in Padang said a field hospital with the capacity to treat up to 400 people was in operation but a military transport plane with 45 tonnes of supplies had been delayed and would arrive on Thursday.

Indonesian Disaster Management Agency spokesman Priyadi Kardono said helicopters made six aid drops to isolated villages on Tuesday, with more flights planned for Wednesday.

"Aid supplies are sufficient... though we welcome more. We have enough tents and about 19,000 tonnes of rice, which is enough to last four months," he said.

Lavy said the biggest challenge was distribution, especially in mountain areas.

"Agencies are still reporting pockets where they found people who say they haven't received any assistance," she told AFP.

There were no signs of disease outbreaks, despite shortages of drinking water and the hundreds of decaying bodies still buried beneath the rubble, she said.

Governor Fauzi denied that any areas had yet to receive aid, and blamed local authorities for any delays.

"Where are the blockages in distribution? If it is blocked, probably it's between the local districts and the people," he said.

"Just imagine, if 100,000 homes collapse, that's 500,000 people (homeless). If there are six people who aren't happy, 10 people who aren't happy, don't make that the news headline.

"We're taking care of 500,000 people in a very short time."

Australian military engineers had set up a plant to convert sea water into drinking water for up to 78,000 people in Padang, a city of a million people, officials said.

The earthquake damaged a supply station that serviced 60 percent of Padang's water and people in the poorest part of the city have been using water from open canals and rivers.
