New Kent, VA--Colonial Downs will usher out its 2009 harness racing season this Saturday (Nov. 7) when it hosts the 12th annual $334,500 Virginia-bred "Day of Champions."

A total of eight championship races featuring Commonwealth-bred 2- and 3-year-old pacers and trotters of both sexes will highlight a 14-race afternoon card. Two of the title races will be non-betting, and will take place at 12:25 and 12:40 p.m., respectively. The first of 12 pari-mutuel harness races will start at 1 p.m., and they will be held in conjunction with the eight Breeders' Cup championship Thoroughbred races simulcast live from Santa Anita.

The most competitive of the Virginia eight is the $43,800 3-year-old colt and gelding pace. A total of nine are in-to-go including Rick's Crossroads, who beat Nicota by a neck in last Saturday's prep in 1:55.2. Richie's Place finished a length back in third.

The $47,800 2-year-old colt and gelding pace features a Fran Raia-trained three-horse entry. Whatamach, Rick's Jackpot and Rick's Luck all finished either first, second or third in their elimination races last week. Whatamach, who was victorious in 1:55.2, took the first elimination race while Bart Dalious's Charlie By Far captured the second one in 1:56.3.

Another three-horse entry from Charlottesville's Edenridge Farms highlights the $41,700 3-year-old filly and mare trot. Sadie Eden, the fastest of the trio, won last week's prep by eight lengths in 1:59.

Charlie Dunavant's Blue Motorcycle is favored early in the $40,400 3-year-old colt and gelding trot. Colonial's leading driver Chris Page directed the Hobokenbahamamamas gelding to his first career win last Saturday in 2:00 despite breaking stride just before the wire. Betting choice The Doctor finished second.

Doors on Saturday will open at 12 Noon. Live racing will run from 12:25 – 5:00 p.m., and the Breeders' Cup simulcast races will run from 1:45 – 7:00 p.m. The Jockey Club and Turf Club Dining Rooms will both be open.

There will be a unique parade of carriages on the track between the second and third pari-mutuel race. Thirteen horse-drawn units will follow each other the length of the stretch in a 10-minute demonstration.

Fans are also asked to bring canned food donations to benefit the Central Virginia Food Bank. Anyone who brings a donation will become eligible to win one of three rides in the starter car that afternoon.

Series news on departure of Yamaha - Motorsport.com

Posted: 04 Nov 2009 03:10 PM PST

YAMAHA WITHDRAWS FROM NATIONAL SERIES

TORONTO, Ont. (November 4) -- Yamaha Motor Canada has announced its withdrawal from the Parts Canada Superbike Championship.

Company spokesman Tim Kennedy revealed the decision at a meeting of the series partner manufacturers in Toronto earlier today.

"We are sorry to have Yamaha leave us," said Colin Fraser of Professional Motorsports Productions, which runs the national motorcycle road racing series. "They have been a valued manufacturer partner from day one and have a long history of success in our sport."

The company played a key role in the restructuring of the series and the growth of television coverage in the mid-1990s.

Five riders have ridden Yamahas to six Canadian national Superbike titles. The first came from Toronto's Miles Baldwin in 1982 aboard a TZ750. West Hill, Ont.'s Art Robbins rode a similar model to the 1985 championship.

Maple Ridge, B.C.'s Steve Crevier and Michel Mercier of Thetford Mines, Que. rode the OWO1 to back-to-back titles in 1989 and 1990, respectively and Granby, Que. racer Pascal Picotte won successive championships on the YZF-R1 in 2003 and 2004.

Additionally, Yamaha riders have taken seven National Pro 600 Sport Bike championships since 1986, the most recent coming courtesy of Picotte in 2004 aboard the YZF-R6.

Last season Andre Laurin and his OTSFF squad handled Yamaha's Canadian road racing program with assistance from Evan Steele Performance and sponsorship from Toyota Canada. Lead rider Kevin Lacombe of Granby rode a YZF-R1 to sixth in Parts Canada Superbike points with podium finishes in four of the seven races and took third in the Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike standings.

His rookie team-mates Royce McLean and Tony Kasper finished ninth and 12th in the Pro Sport Bike championship, respectively. The 14-year-old McLean was particularly impressive and the Coaldale, Alta. rider looked set to take the HJC Pro Rookie of the Year award before an injury in the penultimate race of the year sidelined him.

"Andre Laurin and the OTSFF team were a welcome addition to our series last year," added Fraser. "They brought a very professional program to the national tour and we were looking forward to working with them in 2010."

The national series continues with the support of Parts Canada, Pirelli Tires, BMW Motorrad Canada, Canadian Kawasaki Motors, Honda Canada and Suzuki Canada.

The Parts Canada Superbike Championship will shortly be releasing its 2010 schedule.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Highlights Infineon Raceway 2010 Season Schedule

SONOMA, Calif. -- The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series' 22nd annual visit to the Sonoma Valley will highlight the 2010 Big O Tires Racing Season at Infineon Raceway, raceway officials announced today.

The raceway will boast one of the most diverse motor-racing schedules in the country, featuring NASCAR, NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, IndyCar Series, motorcycles, historic car racing and more.

One major addition to the 2010 schedule is the return of PINKS All Out, the highly-popular television program on SPEED. PINKS All Out debuted in the Sonoma Valley in 2008 before a near-capacity grandstand, and after a one-year hiatus, will return Sept. 17-18 in 2010.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will again headline the schedule with the Toyota/Save Mart 350, which will be held on Father's Day weekend, June 18-20. Road-course racing has quickly become some of the most exciting on the circuit, evidenced by Kasey Kahne's dramatic win in 2009. Race fans will also be treated to an earlier start time of noon (Pacific time) on race day, June 20.

Drag racing will play a major part of the 2010 season, as well, highlighted by the 23rd annual FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals, July 16-18. Antron Brown broke out the broom in 2009 in Sonoma, sweeping the Western Swing. The following weekend, July 23-25, will be the NHRA Division 7 Drag Races, presented by Korbel, followed by PINKS All Out in September.

The Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma marks the IndyCar Series' 6th annual visit to the Sonoma Valley, Aug. 20-22, and its only stop in Northern California in 2010. IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti claimed his first Infineon Raceway victory earlier this year.

Infineon Raceway will also host the best in motorcycle road-course racing at the AMA Motorcycle Sonoma Showdown, May 14-16. The weekend will also feature Supermoto, as well as the first-ever electric motorcycle race in the Sonoma Valley with the TTXGP U.S. Championship.

Tickets for all 2010 major events go on sale to the public, Nov. 13. For tickets or more information, call 800-870-RACE or visit www.infineonraceway.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
